I live in a fairly scuzzy city in a so-called red-state.....probably a lot of theft in this
grubby area I am in.
The Walmarts in this area have put video-recording devices on the self-checkout stations. The software triggers a self-checkout-attendant-alert if certain parameters in the video are met....then the attendant comes and reviews the video and checks your stuff.
It seems like all Walmarts have this technology in their self-checkouts. I've had this happen to me twice in the past couple weeks. The self-checkout attendant comes over and the self-check plays a video of me scanning my items. The employee sees that I scanned all of my items and turns off the alert. It is never clear what caused the alert to be set off, but the device seems to be very sensitive as to whether you are scanning an item before putting it in a bag. It seems theft is more likely when items are left in the cart.
Waiting by the new entrance gates at into Home Depot yesterday we watched as a woman waited until someone entered. She scurried out carrying an expensive extension cord. iI's not only blue states. My Kroger and Home Depot now have gates at the doors, for all the good it does. I could outrun the Kroger security guard who wanders around the store.
My mom was the supervision of meal service at a very large nursing home. Clever help could put a 15 pound roast or ham between her thighs and walk naturally to put out the trash and her friend waiting.
Nobody ever claimed self-checkout theft was ONLY occurring in Blue states. Where is that notion coming from?
The OP's post insinuated that self ck out thefts may be occurring more in Blue states than in Red states, since the 3 states WalMart was forced to close stores in were all Blue states.
That is a logical assumption, but more data would be needed for it to be conclusive.

They closed stores in 12 States blue and red alike
I don't shop at Wal-Mart. My grocery store installed about 8 of the self checkouts some years ago. I've only used them once or twice and only if I had one or two items.
I saw some news story a few weeks ago saying that many retailers are thinking of removing them due to theft and people not ringing up items correctly.

But were all of those closures directly attributed to self-checkout theft? Plz cite.
