Guess it must be locale specific.
My HD has 6 self checkouts. They still have 2 humans at the contractor checkout though.
Median age in my town is 60 so maybe age has something to do with it.
We had self checkouts at Home Depot, but they changed it back and now there is an employee scanning things again, and tools and electric wire is behind bars. If you want to buy wire, you have to get an employee to open the gage, and then walk you to check-out, - they won't hand you the wire.
If the median age is that high in your town, then I think that would certainly explain it. It would certainly lead to safer & low crime environment. Where I live, we have one of the highest crime rates in America. I don't care what DeSantis or anyone else says, because reality hits you in the face here.

One of the nearby supermarkets is now (supposedly) using a camera/AI system to look for whether all items have been scanned. It does seem to work, although it also generates false positives. Of course, it could also be some guy sitting in an office watching a camera...

Do you happen to live in one of the five counties (out of 67) that voted for Charlie Crist instead of DeSantis?
