WalMart shoppers in Maine, Massachusetts, & New Mexico have been stealing from WalMart's self-checkouts, so WalMarts closing some down there in the stores where the theft has been 2x the normal levels.
Usually when there are as many “monitors” as self checkouts. And the monitors are checking their phones. This is a wide corporate problem, regardless of labor issues.
Hiring teenagers to surf their phones while “watching” customers steal is not going to end well for any company. No management overseeing any of this. What amount of pay would people expect to monitor the monitors?
Can you imagine sitting in a meeting trying to figure out how to reduce theft while listening to the excuses?

LOL. It's not "Blue States" and it's not just Wal Mart......it's everywhere with any "self service check out"

You really think Walmart is that stupid that they let those running self checkout just play on their phones all day?
Their phones are company issued ones that have an app that tells them what each customer is doing at self checkout. Lots of tools on their phones to thwart theft. It also alerts them when a customer is having a problem and needs their help. I know a couple people who have that job in my very red town. And theft is a huge problem in our local Walmart. It goes way beyond self checkout. It goes way beyond who you are voting for.
You want to stop shoplifting you need mandatory minimums. First offense 1 year behind bars. 2nd offense 5 years. And so one. In the county I live in now in Oklahoma. If someone is arrested for shoplifting. They spend maybe a night in jail if they get bailed out. In 60 days they plead guilty and go on with their life. Get arrested again? The preceding happens again. They already have a record so whats the difference between 3 or 20 convictions? They are never going to do any real time. So why stop stealing? Lock people up for at least a year. Many will stop stealing and not want to be in prison. Others will be in prison so they can't steal. I see this as the only solution. Or make big box stores delivery or pickup only. No inside shopping.
However in these blue cities / states they are decriminalizing shoplifting or making the dollar amount so high for prosecution that people can steal all day long and not fear getting arrested. That has to change.

This has potential. Could be added to the media lexicon of generous euphemisms. Mostly peaceful protestors, aspiring rappers, gentle giants, & now Blue State-Americans.

Self service checkout are an invitation to crime.
Sure, when the people checking out have no ethics or moral foundation. What other excuses can you come up with to justify petty theft?
That doesn't make sense. Walmart is closing stores due to the rising thefts at the self checkouts? Why not hire a few more people to work the registers and keep the stores open?
There are so many cameras at those self checkouts, why would anyone risk stealing? I guess the thieves are the types that have nothing to lose including their long lost self respect.

"Mental Illness" too.
Suddenly, everybody thinks they're a victim and have some sort of undiagnosed mental illness now.
Walmart did the math and decided that the shrinkage due to self-checkout theft cost less than having a bunch of manned registers running. A change this dramatic in how the business operates will come with wrinkles which need to be ironed out.

All blue states have rednecks. I fail to see your point.
