what does that have to do with anything. are you suggesting this person is accepting welfare from the government to supplement his meager income? in that case, yes. I have a friend who had dedicated his life to music. he makes $60 per hour giving lessons. that's not meager.
And I have an AA in music, and worked in a recording studio for quite some time.... made zero money but loved doing it. Have you ever seen the show '30 days'? It's hosted by Morgan Spurlock, the guy who did Super Size Me. He did an episode where he tried to live 30 days on minimum wage, and it's a bit of an eye opener. He got all his furniture and much of his food for free and was living EXTREMELY frugally and still didn't make it... it might be an interesting for you to watch.
minimum wage is for children. what kind of adult makes minimum wage? these are the reasons why I had room mates for most of my young adult life. it's called working your way up. why do so many people feel entitled to starting in the middle?

There's no way anybody is ever going to convince you that certain things are out of their control. So keep feeling superior and putting everybody down, I'm sure it makes you feel like a better person. When you have to go to the ER because of some weird random problem and the doctor puts you in the hospital for 2 weeks THEN your insurance decides they won't cover it, then maybe you'll stop. That's what happened to me. Zero debt my whole life, then things started snowballing. Now I'm working 2 jobs to make ends meet and it's not pleasant. When you have $20,000 worth of medical bills, plus medication costs etc etc which CAUSES you to go into debt maybe you'll understand.
Until then, keep feeling superior. You deserve it.
perhaps you should read the title of the thread. why do so many people choose to be poor? there are going to be exceptions to the rule. I have stated this. I would say that 90% of people who are poor, are so because of their own choice. it really can't be refuted. I will also say that I don't believe people know what true poverty is. only having enough money for generic white bread and bologna isn't poverty.

Depends on where you live, I guess. I'm supporting two people...and her cat...on $10 an hour. I'm the only person with income.
this is one of the reasons that having a federal minimum wage is stupid. just because someone in NYC can't make it on their wage, they up the federal minimum wage and destroy small businesses in kentucky.

It really does Apartments and even rooms is a shared house are $400 minimum where I'm at. You're lucky to find a room for under $800. Groceries are ridiculous (we grow most of our own, and can for winter) and gas is finally getting lower, so things are getting a bit easier. If it weren't for my medical debt I'd be doing fine on my salary.
My roomate gets paid $9.50 and hour, only pays $300 a month for her room and can barely afford to be there.
It's a commuter type area, so the nearest decent jobs are a 20 minute drive, and the public trans system is HORRID.
I don't mind paying a little extra because I love where I live, and wouldn't dream of moving somewhere else just for the sake of money.
And 80% of government assistances is going to those in urban areas when they have 20% of poverty. The rural areas were there is 80% of poverty get 20%. Why;political power and the reason there are so many people that moved to the cities in the late 60's. Poverty stats do not include what people get from any assistance. Then we don't even know what other money people on assistance make that is never reported. I agree tho that if you took a single guy and put him on welfare he woulkdn't go well;but that is not were the assistance is given or do many not do anyhting else even tho they don;t report the income and the new guy wouldn't know how to work the system like those experienced. Really hard to say just what the real income of those on assistance is but many refuse to go to work for under $15.00 a hour. Many think people working for less are suckers to work.So IMO our system discourages work and we will have a increasing number of those on assistance and ever increase stats on the gap in income as reported.
If you're hit by a car (and live), should someone pay you for the REST of your life? How do you expect to work if you're paralyzed? Should you be allowed to continue living? Or get disabiliity payments from the government?
The other thing is welfare. How many MEN are there on welfare? Why does your welfare recipient tend to be a single woman with kids? Isn't that discriminatory?
I have always maintained that we should take care of the physically or mentally impaired. that is of no fault of their own.
