Gov. Mark Sanford arrived in the Hartsville-Jackson International Airport this morning, having wrapped up a seven-day visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina, he said. Sanford said he had not been hiking along the Appalachian Trail, as his staff said in a Tuesday statement to the media.
Thought I give the lib's something to laugh about.
He was down South America all by himself?...I don't believe this story either. He was probably doing something similar to the activities of the recently exposed GOP Sen. John Ensign.
Unless it was on taxpayers' dime, I don't see that he has a requirement to tell anyone where he is/went? Of course out of courtesy it would be nice to let the family know, but again, I fail to see the need for all the hoopla? I have a feeling his staff and family knew. Some enterprising young journalist waiting to break their "first big story" got wrapped up in a bunch of nothing, I suspect.
I don't see a legal requirement... but, damn... do you just up and leave your job and family for 6 days (longer if the media didn't start harping) without telling them where you will be or calling to check in? I mean, is this not odd behavior for the CEO of a large state? How do you have a feeling that the family and staff knew when they said he was hiking?? Why would they lie to create a bigger story? This is odd.
I guess nobody can say that this is only a liberal plot to bring down Sanford:
"Lies. Lies. Lies. That's all we get from his staff. That's all we get from his people. That's all we get from him," said state Sen. Jake Knotts, R-West Columbia. "Why all the big cover-up?"
"(R) Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer said he was concerned that the governor's staff lied about Sanford's whereabouts, adding that if they didn't know where he was they should have said so. "For his staff to lie to the people of South Carolina and say he was one place when in fact he wasn't, that concerns me," Bauer said."

"Sanford told The State he was alone on the trip to Argentina. He declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline.
Trying to make such a drive could frustrate a weekend visitor to Argentina. In Buenos Aires, the Avenida Costanera is the only coastal road, and it's less than two miles long. Reaching coastal resorts to the south requires a drive of nearly four hours on an inland highway with views of endless cattle ranches. To the north is a river delta of islands reached only by boat."

I agree. I don't know that there's any legal recourse in SC for this type of behavior. HOWEVER, it does illustrate irresponsible behavior. I'd imagine this guy will have a difficult time getting reelected, especially if additional examples of irresponsible behavior can be cited and used against him in a campaign.
