The only downside to a great experience in Astoria is, you're not right on the ocean. You're on the river. So, if you're looking for gazing out the window at waves crashing on the beach ... not going to happen.

Come on Leis,

Steve has told us that he's been married at least half a dozen times!

I think the "romance" part is the part he understands the best!

Very true... it all depends on where you stay and how high up you are to see the waves. It's hard to have a bad time at the coast, no matter where you end up.

I can highly recommend the following places for "romantic"

Heceta Head LighthouseHome | Heceta Head Lighthouse

The Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast - Bandon, Oregon - Located on the beach opposite Bandon's historic lighthouse at the mouth of the Coquille River in beautiful Bandon, Oregon. (Gray Whale Room.... wow!)

And in Washington:
Vacation Houses at Washington State Parks - Go for Cape Disappointment Lighthouse or Fort Columbia.

I stayed in 3 of the rooms here, The top suite is wonderful. Romantic yes. Waves crashing yes.
Channel House - Depoe Bay - Depoe Bay, Oregon

Any room facing the ocean would be super in my opinion. It has been awhile but the first room I stayed in had a small library. Some fantastic books with great stories about the coast.

Wow thanks, everyone! I was hoping there would be overwhelming consensus on one particular spot so I could just book and be done with!. LOL. A couple of recommendations sound spot on on what I had in mind but looks like we'll still need to make multiple trips to enjoy the other parts as well. Hey, what better reason for more romantic getaways right?

Thanks for the good laugh too at Steve's expense.

Looking forward to the trip and thanks again!

I like Sylvia Beach Hotel a lot - it's charming and quaint and you can wander straight out onto the beach or see the waves crashing from your room if you're seaward. Last time I was there Ken Kesey was down having breakfast.

Salishan is more luxuriant (plus golfing if that does it for you), though I would note it's not directly on the beach either. It's a pretty decent walk out across 101 and the golf course, and then cut through a housing development.

Astoria imo has the best dining variety/quality on the coast. And while I can see the response that 'it's not romantic' - perhaps thinking of the strip as you enter town from the south - it really can be once you get in and know your way around. The column has great views, the river walk and most of downtown is quite nice, there's a great little bookstore, lots of cafes, etc.

But unless you live in Pdx it's also going to be a long drive. Not sure, do we know where in OR the OP lives?

It's hard to go too wrong on most of the coast. You could make a go of Bandon, Newport, Cannon Beach, Astoria, even Neskowin or a half dozen other places.

Well, we're in the Portland Forum, and the OP said they "moved here" so I'd assume it's Portland.

That was my thinking as well. When I lived in Salem, Lincoln City and Yachats were easier to reach. Nice tidepooling in Yachats. From Portland 26 drops you right into Cannon Beach, from there its north to Astoria, south for everything else. I had heard about the food offerings in Astoria. I really must go there sometime.
