Wow, seems this is happening everywhere. LandOLakes butter changed their packaging for basically the same reason. If they change it one possibility is the Washington Hogs, since they do have that history. They can have porky pig as their logo.
The mayor at first expressed horror about the name (rather dramatic considering she grew up rooting for them and never batted an eyelid).
Then, suddenly liking the idea of them coming back to DC, changer her mind on the name.
Now that the Cultural Revolution Part II has swept into DC, the name is suddenly horrific again.
One empty gesture is bad enough, but to keep going back and forth ...
As a lifelong fan and resident of the area I don't think this is true. She was always against the name and for years it has been a stumbling block to bring the Redskins back to DC.
Personally I went back and forth. When it was first brought up in 1991 I saw the problem, later I thought it was obviously offensive and should be changed. Then I was presented with so many polls and quotes from Native Americans, the people whose opinion is all that should matter on the subject, saying the vast majority supported the name.
But by now I'm just sick and tired of the debate. Just change it already and get it over with, then we get rid of stuff like the Tomahawk Chop.
Redhawks, Redtails and Warriors are the names floating out on the Google machine. I don't think Snyder will go with Redtails considering it was proposed by DC politicians. Don't see Snyder offering that concession. Redhawks and Warriors would be applicable and wouldn't require significant rebranding. Redhawks could use the R logo helmet and Warriors could use the spear as noted above. Given today's climate even the spear will offend the professionally offended.
Name them "the weenies". That should be nonoffensive. Or maybe "the little bunnies".
Well, I think the trademark has lapsed on the Washington Generals.. Seems kinda apt, that's the team that lost thousands of games to the Globetrotters.
