"We're changing the team name because it looks like it might start eating into my profit margin. But first we're going to go through a months-long dance of pretending to thoughtfully consider whether or not to change it before we eventually announce the already-made decision to change the name. In the meantime, I hope to make a boatload of money selling 'Redskins' stuff to people rushing to scoop it up before it's no longer available!"
Redhawks, Redtails and Warriors are the names floating out on the Google machine. I don't think Snyder will go with Redtails considering it was proposed by DC politicians. Don't see Snyder offering that concession. Redhawks and Warriors would be applicable and wouldn't require significant rebranding. Redhawks could use the R logo helmet and Warriors could use the spear as noted above. Given today's climate even the spear will offend the professionally offended.
I doubt that they will name the team Warriors, especially with the spear, because it won't be looked upon, by the people who are doing the most complaining, as much of a change. Redtails is a stupid name but, at least, it is the name of the first black air force squadron in WWII. I have no idea what a Redhawk is. Is there such a bird or is that a made up name?
I don't know what the new name of the team is going to be but one FACT remains.
The thread titled "Hail to the Washington Redskins" will soon be no more.
I understand following a team for so many years. It's in your blood - but times change -and whether you like it or not, fans of that team will ALSO have to adapt and accept those changes.
Walter Wetzel, a former Blackfeet tribal chairman and National Congress American Indian President, urged the Redskins in 1971 to change their logo from the burgundy and gold "R'" to the image it still has today.
The name, logo and likeness have been mired in controversy because of the racial connotations associated with it. There's historical context to how the Redskins logo and name showcase a different intention than some interpreted, according to Lance Wetzel.
"I took my dad's word that this was a big-time logo representing our people," he said. "You look at the logo and Blackfeet history, and they are considered powerful people. I identify and connect with the logo that way."
Although I know it won't happen, I think a consultation with the tribe (which is here in Montana) for a name change to 'Blackfeet' would have been an interesting solution. There's a lot of pride in the tribe, and maybe a modest cut on merchandising fees to benefit indigenous peoples causes would help to alleviate some of the issues we're facing today.
Just wishful thinking, but I certainly think it would a great way to honor the man and the tribe that helped to develop the logo.
