I'm with you on this! I buy all my meats and produce at HT, no other store in the area that I've been in (which includes Trader Joe, Whole Foods, Food Lion, Kroger, Lowes, Wal-Mart and Target...and periodically some of the Asian and Indian markets). At this time, no one matches HT for quality and variety in produce and meats. Only Whole Foods has a better fish counter, and their prices make HT seem like almost free! I haven't seen any other store carry organic Smart Chicken (heck, I'm not sure I've seen another story carry ANY Smart Chicken), which is much better than any other boneless, skinless product because they air-cool product, ensuring a significant portion of the weight you're paying for isn't water, like the water cooled chicken. Nice variety of specialty meats, I'm not sure anyone else carries rabbit, or linguica. If they do sell, I certainly hope it's to someone who can ensure there is no change in these areas. OH...almost forgot the wine department! Great selection for when I just need a bottle of something and don't want to make a trip to a wine store. I've had some GREAT wine finds at HT, and for really reasonable prices.

Really, I hope they don't sell. I've never been in a Publix, but from what I've looked at online, it seems like they have a lot of loyalty to their store-brand products, and there's a wide variety of them. That's nice, but it sure doesn't let me know if I can get blood oranges or broccoli raab in the produce section!

Harris Teeter is the only one of the local "regular" grocery stores that I enjoy shopping at. That said, I do almost all my food shopping at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Fresh Market. It doesn't seem like the produce is that great at HT, but then again I'm super picky about it. I really don't like Kroger, so I'd hate to see them take over HT. Publix is completely unknown to me, although they seem to have a lot of fans on this board. It'll be interesting to see what happens to HT, but it won't really affect me.

I'm just waiting for somebody to pop on here suggesting that WEGMAN'S!!!! buy HT. Oh wait, looks like I just brought it up.

From my understanding of Wegman's based on reading these threads (never been there myself) many of the newer, larger HT stores could probably be converted and fit in as Wegman's, but the older and/or smaller stores, probably not.

Yeah. Same here. The kinds of chips or soda we might occasionally buy (we're water drinkers, rarely drink soda at all) are the cane sugar sodas and organic chips. They cost pretty much the same everywhere anyway.

I prefer The Meathouse for most meats and marinated chicken. I know they carry Kobe steaks, but I can't afford those. I'm going to have them prepare a spatchcock chicken to try on the Kamado Joe.

The good folks in Charlotte have already brought up Wegmans.

I'm just hoping they get bought out by a decent NY Pizza family.

I find HT's prices to be significantly higher on most things and not always fresher. In fact the one place I buy produce and have to return it often is from HT!

Without trying to draw a separate debate, I find that the new Publix stores that are in the Charlotte area remind me quite a bit of Wegmans (I'm not a fan of either store), so if you end up with a Publix in your area, you'd be getting generally the same type of store, just with a different name and store brand.

Oh, no! I am a HT shopper but over the past year I've noticed that sometimes their produce isn't as fresh as it used to be. But I rarely buy fresh produce at Kroger or Food Lion because it's been awful! Just my personal experience.

Never heard of Publix or Wegmans but if HT sells, I'll be at Whole Foods much more often for the fresh stuff.

HT always has great sales, especially if you're an eVic card holder that gets sales via email. Overall I've always liked the place.

Thanks for the warning in advance!

best,
toodie
