Hi OP. I just moved here last spring. I came from FL, but my family moved there from LI when I was a kid.
There's definitely more space and less traffic. It's also cheaper than NY.The housing market is pretty hot, but ymmv depending on neighborhood. Can't say if you can survive on one income with 3 kids without a salary estimate. Food is expensive. Utilities are a factor since it's hot in the summer (10 days straight of OVER 100 degree days last summer), and cold in the winter (lows in the 20s on a few days this week and next week). But those are extremes.
Coming here to avoid ticks is a Bad Idea. There is Lyme. There are ticks. In fact, there is a lot more green space in the south, and wildlife of all sorts compared to long Island. Be prepared for bugs you've never seen before. If you have dogs, they will need flea, tick, and heartworm prevention for most of the year. Not many gated communities in the Triangle. Thankfully, I left them all behind when I left FL.

i am sure there are lots of bugs there, esp bc of the climate and greens!! but it is a fact that lyme is more prevalent here than in in the west and south, although then you have to deal with rocky mountain spotted fever, but i dont think that is a NC issue.....however, being a pharmacist and having lyme I am actually exploring the possibility of working in the field as to help lyme patients, so in reality i dont want to leave "lyme" behind altogether! that's a whole other topic of discussion i can go on and on about!!

I hope it won't change your mind, but NC is one of the leading states for RMSF:
"According to the CDC, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri comprise 60 percent of all reports of RMSF in the country. In North Carolina, Wake, Chatham and Alamance counties have the greatest number of cases."

I was admittedly in NYC (Queens), not Long Island (and grew up in Georgia and therefore have a pretty high heat tolerance), but I have found food and utilities, especially utilities, to be cheaper in NC compared to NY. ConEd was absurdly expensive (and old NY buildings=terrible insulation/weather proofing). My utility bill was essentially cut in half for twice the space.
The title of this thread really should be "thinking of moving...not hoping" - anyway to change the title? can't figure it out if can be done?
