Update for I-42. While the minutes from last month's meeting have not yet been posted, the US-70 Corridor Commission did post the Director's Report for June & July. The Havelock Bypass is still tied up in negotiations due to the lawsuit filed by the SELC last December. The let date for upgrading US-70 to interstate standards in James City has been moved up from 2021 to 2019 with no opposition from the locals. The Kinston Bypass is apparently being designed to be raised above the flood area that was hit by Hurricane Matthew and the draft Environmental Impact Statement is planned for early 2018. The planned projects on US-70 near Wilson's Mills got a lot of support during the public meeting on July 17 with Right of Way beginning next year.

For those interested, I found the most recent crash summary posted by the US-70 Corridor Commission that covers 2014-2016. It also provides AADT info.

Per a post from a member on AARoads, I-87 shields are finally going up on the Knightdale Bypass.

NCDOT's signage plans can be found in his blog here:

Goodbye Interstate 495; Hello Interstate 87

This article talking about the new I-87 signs finally gives an answer as to why AASHTO rejected NCDOT's request for I-89 last year in favor of I-87.

Interstate 87: NCDOT puts up new signs between Raleigh and Wendell | News & Observer

Quote:
AASHTO spokesman Tony Dorsey said the organization’s route numbering committee decided that the new North Carolina highway has a better chance of one day connecting to I-87 in New York than to I-89 in New England, and decided the road between Raleigh and Virginia should be I-87.
...which doesn't make sense because it wasn't intended to connect to New England or New York nor are there any plans to...

You never know, maybe in 100 or 200 years they will finish upgrading US-13 on the Delmarva Peninsula and they can overlay I-87 through NJ and eventually connect it to New York. Or by that time we will finally have those flying cars!

I think they chose 87 because it makes all those relocated New Yorkers feel right at home...

... either that, or it confounds them when they can't find good pizza and bagels...

haven't been reading this at all but I didn't know non-spur interstate highways could have repeated numbers. Guess I'll be adding that to my list of trivia questions.

It's frowned upon by AASHTO and FHWA, but it's possible if there's no other alternative, or if Congress steps in.

Existing examples of duplicated 2-digit interstates are:

I-74 between Davenport, IA and Cincinatti, OH and there's NC's I-74, which was supposed to be an extension of the existing I-74 from Cincinatti until WV and OH backed out of it.

I-86 in Idaho and another I-86 from PA to NY.

I-88 in Illinois and another in NY.

I-84 from Oregon to Utah and another from PA to MA.

I-76 from CO to Nebraska and another from OH to NJ.

The average joe doesn't know or depend on the "rules" for naming interstates...

but the average joe will be confused by two I-87s.

They should just give the Raleigh- Norfolk interstate a 3 digit number that's unique.
