but the average joe will be confused by two I-87s.

They should just give the Raleigh- Norfolk interstate a 3 digit number that's unique.
When I lived in New England, my parents and I have driven I-87 numerous times. When I heard about it today, I completely forgot about it since I live down here now and haven't driven on the New York one in forever. I don't think it will be a problem for the average joe if I notice these sort of things and still didn't remember.....how do you think people handle state routes with the same number?

They'll only be confused if they try to drive continuously between one and the other. It's a long way to New York from here.

Also, 180+ miles is way too long for a 3-digit Interstate.

Agree. with today's gps devices and smartphones, the average driver is going to follow the prompts Siri gives them and won't care a whole lot the "correct" numbering of roads.

I-87 in NC and I-87 in NY will not confuse anyone.

For roadgeeks everywhere, this is a sad truth.

NCDOT has posted a recent feasibility study (dated 8-16-2017) for upgrading US-64 to interstate standards from the end of the Knightdale Bypass (Rolesville Road) to US-17 in Williamston.

Interstate 495 already exists in Virginia as a circumferential interstate highway around the District of Columbia. If an interstate highway from Fayetteville to Raleigh is realized, reuse Interstate 495.

There's no need for another interstate linking Fayetteville and Raleigh. I-95 and I-40 already serves that connection just fine. Now, linking Fayetteville to Greensboro by upgrading NC-87 and US-421 isn't such a bad idea...

An interstate highway connecting Fayetteville to Greensboro through Sanford could be a new Interstate 495. United States Route 1 from Sanford to Raleigh could become an extension of either Interstate 42, Interstate 87, or Interstate 440. Extending Interstate 440 southward would require changing exit numbers in Wake County.

Three-digit numbers are primarily utilized for auxiliary interstate highways that are circumferential, radial, or spurs serving urban areas.

One and two-digit numbers are used for mainline interstate routes.
