Here's some other definitions:

"A tunnel is a long passage which has been made under the ground, usually through a hill or under the sea."

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us...english/tunnel

A long passage under or through the earth, esp. one made for vehicles

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/...english/tunnel

Wikipedia says:

"A tunnel is an underground passageway, dug through the surrounding soil/earth/rock and enclosed except for entrance and exit, commonly at each end."

Both the culverts in question sit at grade level.

It's open to interpretation man. All of those definitions you cited say either through a hill, through the earth, or dug through the surrounding soil.

All of those things can be applied to the Ligon Street tunnel.

Two lanes, possibly three with a pedestrian lane. It's more "sizable" than the Ligon tunnel and longer. And it's no more Meredith-centric than Ligon Tunnel is NSCU-centric. That's my story and i'm sticking to it.
Sorry ... think I'm gonna have to reject this one. Meredith is private and not welcoming to thru traffic...
But I'll go explore it for myself and get back to you. I've never heard of thru traffic going through that tunnel. We'll see...

And BC, stop being a pooper, OK? We wanna be able to say we have tunnels in Raleigh, dammit! lol

From https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/bridge/tunn...nel_manual.pdf

Quote:
Road tunnels as defined by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Technical Committee for Tunnels (T-20), are enclosed roadways with vehicle access that is restricted to portals regardless of type of the structure or method of construction. The committee further defines road tunnels not to include enclosed roadway created by highway bridges, railroad bridges or other bridges. This definition applies to all types of tunnel structures and tunneling methods such as cut-and-cover tunnels (Chapter 5), mined and bored tunnels in rock (Chapter 6), soft ground (Chapter 7), and difficult ground (Chapter 8), immersed tunnels (Chapter 11) and jacked box tunnels (Chapter 12).
Chapter 1 gives more general characteristics of a tunnel

A tunnel serves food, while a culvert does not.

When and where do I collect my Points and kudos for being the first correct answer? I'm assuming Harris-Teeter sub points and a kudos granola bar?
