Cheaply ostentatious, as another said --especially with those snake looking things tacked on around the doors!

I think it's ostentatious and overdone. The front garage does not appeal to me.

I prefer the clean lines of a mid century modern ranch, or a craftsmen home.

The neighboring houses aren't exactly historic, but a quick Google street view drive shows that the Mediterranean faux palace is very much out of character for the neighborhood.

That's probably why the oldsters call them "monstrosities."

Apparently they have this guy to thank for making their neighborhood the "Chinese Beverly Hills."

My favorite quote:

A growing architectural rivalry between the two men is a key part of a construction wave that is radically remaking Arcadia. Blocks that were once sleepy, with single-story ranch houses from the 1940s set comfortably back from the street, are now lined with bloated villas pushed near the front of their lots as if clamoring for attention.

The 1908 house that was replaced by our "parking garage"'

Annual property taxes were $1100. Now are $6700.

it's not ugly, but they're very stuck to a certain time period. in 10 years, people will look at homes like this, and more so, the cookie cutter style mcmansions as tacky and gravitate to retro homes.. it's just like fashion, i was astounded when my daughter wanted to buy vintage 80's clothes and ransacked my garage for my old clothes.

that too dies out, it's all a cycle folks.

But it's not the worst house I've ever seen, either.
You must be from Texas, where they stick the garage in back. It's so creepy and shrinks your backyard to a pin dot.

nice attempt, but still looks cheaply made.. if you have an eye for it, you know how cheaply it's constructed to look expensive. builders have developed an art for that.

here's real architecture...

It all depends on context. While I don't personally care for the houses in #1 or #7, each would look okay in a neighborhood of similar homes. (Climate matters, too, of course.) To put one in a neighborhood of older homes of a different style, all of a similar style, is not only a challenge and a (most likely deliberate and arrogant) slap in the face of those who made the neighborhood you're moving into, but it is aesthetically disastrous for the older homes AND the new home. It destroys the neighborhood and it makes the new house look as arrogant and show-offish as it is when put in such a location.

What on earth?? Are people setting orphanages in these homes or something? Why so big? I would get lost!
