I would love to see the old "crap shacks"...but not a fan of this kind of house. It's like people have no sense - they take every design element they have ever heard of and throw it in their new abode with no thought to whether it works aesthetically or not.
here's the beauty that was demolished to build the mcmansion
The 1908 house that was replaced by our "parking garage"'
At least on the outside, I see almost nothing left of the 1908 house, so it probably wasn't a big loss. But, I'm positive it looked much better before being remuddled over the years.

As others have said, if the rest of the houses in the neighborhood look like this one, then the new house is a monstrosity.
On its own, the only fault I see in the spanish house is the roof line. There appears to be very little pitch for some reason, unless that is simply the fault of the photography. Otherwise a tile roof needs greater pitch for both visual and practical reasons (shedding water).
We have the same issue in our neighborhood.
The old timers are happy that the Latino gangs no longer rule, but they hate the new modern houses like mine.
I like this "modern" one a lot better than the one from the OP. These are the newest in our city, starting in the mid-$1.1 million for 4,000 sf, and I think it's kind of ugly:
We also have a few like this, which I find more attractive:
What luv4horses said is just common sense to me. This home is a Spanish style with clay roof and stucco, right? I'd say there are a lot of areas that would welcome the style. It's not a style I prefer. In the wrong neighborhood it would look like a commercial facility (Spa? Office complex?) I totally dislike garages in front. What happened to curb appeal? Apparently they can afford to put the garage wherever they want, why up front? Casa pobre
It's huge but, hey, if that's what you want. I personally am putting off cleaning my tiny home by posting here.
I'm in a New England area where many homes have placards stating "built in 1760" or some such year WAY long ago. I absolutely LOVE the homes around here.
Could be the newer homes are making their dated houses look shabby. They probably need to step up their game and improve/update their own homes. Property values should increase, right?
Are they jealous?
