My 20th century ranch house has crawlspace, too. The best thing about the crawlspace is that the raised foundation enables perimeter forced air heating from the floor. The houses around here that have slab foundations all have awful forced air from the ceiling that blows down on your face.
A disadvantage of slab foundations is that they are prone to insect infestations. "As the ground settles, shifts and moves with the weather and time, slab layers can crack" and "termites are quite efficient at their job of destroying wood and they have found ways to bypass a layer of concrete and still find access to wood structures."
