Yes - you are correct. Only stand up comics are capable of getting girlfriends. You sure do know how to interpret people's comments and advice! That's exactly what they are implying! There's really no hope for you.
Some women dislike those approaches and some women like those approaches. It's possible this 'women say damn near every form of approaching them is a terrible idea' is you focusing on the negative and applying it to all/most women as a way to excuse your failures.
Either way women aren't a hive mind and just because some women don't want to be approached at work doesn't mean it won't work on other women.
Perhaps what one is 'supposed' to do is approach whoever and whenever it is wanted as in my experiences most men don't listen to what women don't want when it means limiting their chances at having sex.

Don't put me in that group
When I sense any sort of awkwardness like my presence is not welcome, I run about 500 miles the other way
I'm not in the business of making anybody feel uncomfortable and if they don't want me to talk to them, I can sense that right away
The key isnt to 'approach' the key is to put yourself in a position to be standing next to her when light conversation can start. You might be on a supermarket line or a starbucks line and she could be behind you or in front of you or next to you...so, you're not 'walking up to her' you're just next to her and conversation breaks out. I would imagine that's a better way of meeting people rather than seeing someone across the room and making the long walk towards her.
Working out
Sports
Food/Cooking/Grilling
Every genre of music
Every genre of movies
Videogames
etc...
I enjoy almost everything and I'm willing to try anything that I'm not currently into. I haven't gotten into reading yet but I want to do that in the near future

Not "dating value", but "first impression" value. And though you may not comprehend it, that's exactly what you have been talking about.
