i'm average looking, not a hunk, but not a mess either.
This is very vague. Average is a word that can mean anything (online, when a guy says he is average, he is usually overweight & not attractive).
Actually, your entire description of yourself is vague. Your writing is kind of a dry & just states facts; where's your personality? If you took everything you wrote and put it in a profile on a dating site, I would think "bland, boring, NO". Just being honest....

That thread was only made FOUR days ago, and that's not really enough time to correct your attitude in a permanent way. In addition, what's also worrisome is that you are already 29 years, you shouldn't have been acting that way at all, and adults (which you are) don't change their behavioural and emotional patterns that quickly or even all that much.
And in that thread, I don't know why you avoided answering how old you are for several pages when you were asked repeatedly. How many girlfriends have you had? And how long did each relationship last? And why did they end?
- am considered intelligent by most people I know. I have a lot of knowledge about different topics, and feel I can hold my own in intelligent debate.
- treat people well in general, and don't go out of my way to be a bastard to people.
- have respect for women, in that I don't see women as just only there for sex and nothing else. I spend time to get to know women, before any intimate things happen
- I have a good job, and am studying to propel myself in the future.
So, am I dateable material?
No definitely not! Why? Because you sound weak and needy; two things that women don't like. Show some confidence.

i haven't dated much, to be honest. I want to know what characteristics women find good in men.
Here's what I find attractive in men - sweetness (truly my #1). Good-hearted. Funny. Interesting. Has Integrity.
Here's what I don't find attractive - quick-tempered. Immature. Boring. Arrogant.
Don't know if you fit any of these, but that's what I like.
I think you should post a list of pluses and minuses and then re-ask.
