With a pension you often reach a point where you are basically working for very little or nothing...

The Public Safety pensions around here typically have a 3% per year plus many were able to pension spike netting their full salary in retirement...

Older officers had an even better deal in that their pension is tied to what that position pays currently... some are receiving 2x or more what they ever earned on the job...
Yes, and that's one of the reasons why public service unions have a bad rap. It will only be a matter of time until that gravy train ends

No one in my family has ever had a pension and this includes me... When I went to work in the corporate world it came with all the big company benefits which over time have all but disappeared... so much for planning.

A few weeks ago I broke a finger while doing cleaning of all things... it has really impacted on what normal things I can and cannot do... put off the tree work and a concrete project.

12 from my High School Class all went into Law Enforcement with 2 year Admin of Justice degrees... I though I would be smart and get my 4 year degree first and in those extra 2 years everything changed...

All but one is retired now and none are under a 100k in pension/benefits... just saying Oakland Police pays well with great benefits.

Or until PBGC determines otherwise.

Yep, that's me. Loved my work and my coworkers, love being retired. Life is good.

Life is full of adjustments. If you find yourself in a situation that requires changing in order for you to feel good about your life, it's far better to work to make the needed changes than sit in one place and whine how badly the world is treating you because it's not giving you what you want.

You are never going to get what you desire in Portland. It's a place in which you cannot fulfill your wishes. You either need to move to where you can attain your goals or suck it up and accept your fate if you want to remain in a city in which you cannot afford to live the way you want.

You are not owed anything by anybody. Don't expect anyone to pave the way for you, neither the government nor in the private sector. Make your own changes for yourself and you will spend less time fretting about your life.

The best I could find was 4 room cottage of 592 Square Feet...

The government was pleased as HeII I bought it and turned it around... went from a dump to nice and well cared for.

Amazing what cleaning the yard, paint, windows and a new roof can do.

Oakland California...

That actually sounds nice. Most of the apartments I've lived in weren't that large. But they were very nice.
