crap happens to us .however odds are very very high you will not be dead at 65 .

as far as retiring early ,hey that is up to you and your desire and motivation to do so .

a 65 year old couple today has a 97% chance of one of them seeing 75.
There's well over 1 billion people on this earth and hundreds of societies to maintain them all. I find this mentality comes from laziness, which I have no sympathy for, or inability to find career in whatever one has professed in, which is what it is and the nature of an evolving world. Spend that energy that you're wasting on thinking depressive thoughts and be a productive member of society. This isn't an NYC specific thing.
As long as you breathe, you are slave of something. The least that you are slave of is simply Time. No human being is free from anything. Even if you have everything and anything in the world, you simply cannot escape with all the molecules that form you as a human, unless you choose to kill yourself. Therefore, there is no freedom, it is your perception of what freedom is. In addition, what is life? What was the purpose of everything you did in life? Do you know the answer? If you do, then perhaps you wouldn't ask this question in the first place.
If you have a problem with this why don't you move to a socialist country?
We know how well that goes... in socialist country's they get 30-35 hour work weeks, retirement options at 55, one month paid vacations, paid maternity/paternity leave, generous pensions, affordable housing and healthcare, and even labor rights and labor unions.
Who wants that?
In American capitalism we get none of that, but hey this 'Merica, land of the free home of the brave !!!
How dare you disgrace those who fought for you to work a 55 hour work week until your 75, earn no retirement benefits, have to reverse mortgage you home, end up homeless, and leave nothing for your children!

I have no interest in retirement. I put a little money away and don't worry about it. I think people that live check to check for the prime of thier lives so they can have a nice retirement are crazy. Too much of a risk. I'll live my life while young and healthy. If I make it to 70, then I probably won't care about money and having fun anyway.
ha ha ha , what can possibly go wrong with that idea !!!!! having reached retirement , i can say nothing can be worse than being old and poor and having few or no choices in life . while money may not buy happiness , many times it certainly can buy choices .
if you think it can be tough working and finding a job at 65 , try it at 80. so it is all about a balance between now and later .
it is like fighting a war. pulling from one front to sure up another wins a battle . but it usually loses the war.

The young are stupid with health and no money
The old are wise with hardships and wealth
Hard to have your cake and eat it too in this world
But you need to work hard and save, invest wisely and resist temptation to vices (drugs, alcohol, gambling, hookers). Do that and you will have enough wealth to prosper before retirement, and during retirement you will live well
Ideally you should work at something you like to do or find a different job, lest you have that miserable life only to die a failure. But sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do to put food on the table, people are counting on you.
Take your pleasures one at a time and enjoy every waking minute you can because it's gonna end for every single one of us if it isn't tomorrow then years down the road
