So is everyone in NYC okay with slaving for other people and retiring at an old age and then dying?
It honestly doesn't make any sense to me...
why is life set up this way? It's a system I know but... don't we all wanna stay away from the system?
Thoughts on this?

Whether you work for yourself or work for someone else there is that need to support yourself and your family. Try to find a job you like and it is not that bad. Don't be so negative. There are decent jobs that you can retire from earlier than 65.

We get to retire? Unless I make a big play, I expect to be working right up until lunch of the day I keel over...

It's not just people in New York doing this. Unless you inherit a lot of money or marry up, you need to work for a living, no matter where you live.

Even though your handle is new, this somehow sounds familiar.

If you want to ask why, I suppose you could study capitalism. No, we don't all want to stay away from the system. Many people enjoy being part of large projects - publishing a valuable magazine, running a good school, working at a great arts organization. Especially in NYC, since you chose to ask here, many people are delighted to be working with top experts in their fields. Many people find their work rewarding, and don't regard it as slaving.

Perhaps you could come up with something you enjoy doing, too. If you don't, you can certainly quit, if you don't mind all the things you'll have to give up.

As to the dying, I don't know of any way around that.

I agree. It’s not what life is about. Hope some of you retire early to live your true lives

Seriously.

I actually enjoy working. We live in a society, and it’s great to have a purpose in life. People that work later in life tend to live longer as well.

Some people die before they get to retire, so there are even worse things than the original post.
