You think WE beat the odds, consider the frog. A frog lays ten thousand eggs. Only a hundred hatch to tadpoles, and maybe a few survive to adulthood and lay viable eggs which willl die if it doesnt rain.. One in 10,000 this year, one in 10,000 from his mothers eggs last year, so going back 100 years, the chance of a line of frogs from 1920 is one in a number that has 400 zeroes. Think about that next time you see one hopping across the road, narrowly escaping your tires. How many times has that frog's ancestors escaped almost certain death?
Yes, but I am referring to human beings. Also, I do feel grateful not to be a frog. Or a deer, squirrel, mosquito, fish, or gnat.
And by being here where we live, and having the ability to communicate, have shelter, buy and prepare food, have easy access to clean water, medical care and so many other things...we are lucky creatures.
Surviving to elderly years might only be genetic or luck and good doctors. It is not winner or loser. It's percentages. I chose this dichotomy because it is so prevalent in western culture, maybe universal. Some people delude themselves into thinking they are "winners" or "losers", based on their selective and poor memory of life events. False beliefs and wishful thinking prevails. Some are still programmed by our parents all our lives into thinking we aren't good enough, or we are better than the Jones'. If you think that money is most important, as our culture claims, that sets the standard. Who among you believes that the morally virtuous life is best, as Socrates taught?
Some of us have high personal expectations and ambition that is unreachable...other able bodied people I know have absolutely no ambition or motivation to do anything....except to be entertained. Is that an enviable winning attitude?
Imagine that you attained none of your goals in life...do you still call yourself winner? Or whiner?
