Keep your weight in the normal range. Eat a balanced diet. Limit you alcohol to the sobriety level, get some exercise 3 or 4 days a week for 1/2 hour, get enough sleep, and keep your stress level down. Live in a safe location, and cut out risky behavior. That's about all you can do.
It is even more important than genetics, or exercise. The whole idea is to reduce the amount of INSULIN you produce. Carbs make you produce a lot of it. Sugar is the cause of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimers, cataracts, and a big contributor to inflammation in the body, which leads to arthritis - you know, all the typical "diseases of aging".
It's never too late to correct or improve the above conditions. See Dr. Jason Fung on intermittent fasting. A 2 day fast, or periodic week long fast, or even eating 2 meals daily instead of 3, is a good way to reduce your insulin output. You will have more energy, mental clarity, lose excess weight, reduce pain and inflammation, and be amazed at how well you feel.
I think controlling reactions to stressful situations is a big key. I seem to react worse to stress now than when I was younger. It’s affecting my health.
Good genes, common sense, enjoyment of life and lots of laughter; all might help you life longer, or at least happier for the time you've got, because no one really knows. For heaven's sake, have food that you enjoy sometimes and don't let the food police get you down. (There are too many of those, and most are full of it). A few cookies here and there (only the BEST) plenty of walking, laughter. Stretch. Make soup. Have a piece of the very best chocolate you can find and eat it slowly.
Try not to worry about what anyone thinks of you. What do they know, anyway? No one's really that big an expert on life in general (even me!) Don't get too hung up over the past or future. Do the best you can for now. Hug people. Pet a dog. Walk and look at the trees and sky. Those really help with stress.

I'm so sorry for you.......I have family, friends and activities that I intend to do until I can't....I know plenty of people in their late 70's/early 80's that are still hiking, Jeeping, shooting...
I intend to do everything I can until I can't any more......
the two most unhealthy (diabetes, obesity, hypertension, smoking), dislikeable bastards I've ever known lived to 85. they were both well off financially. I think genetics plays the biggest part in longevity, but financial security and meanness seem to be major factors, too.
