No, I think it was a retail space called "Hit Or Miss" right next to the Payless. It is adjacent to two other related redevelopment projects with a common owner, Pizza Rock and District 30. They opened last week to much fanfare.

I think you are thinking of Hitomi, at 13th and R. There was another Japanese place behind the Waffle Square between R and S on 10th, I think it converted to a bar a year or two ago.

Other sad losses of recent years are most of the little Asian restaurants in Southside--there was a Japanese restaurant called Rickhsa on 10th and W, with a second-floor Japanese/Chinese restaurant across the street, both are now closed. I mentioned some above already, and the excellent Japanese bakery on the same block is still open, and on hot summer days they still serve Japanese style snow cones. There are still a few little corner stores where nothing is written in English.

There are a lot of fantastic places out in South Sacramento along the boulevards--Franklin, Stockton, Freeport--that my foodie friends report on constantly, but I don't like driving to eat so I miss out on a lot of these amazing and cheap places for tortas, pho etcetera. It has been worth it on days when I happened to be out that way.

There used to be a Chinese place on Freeport 3 or 4 blocks north of Florin that was open all night long and served lots of stuff with tentacles. Everything was good. The News and Review described it as a place where "most of the patrons seem to be in a stupor". I never did learn the real name,we just called it The Stupor Place. Wonder if it's still around?

You're right. Hitomi. It really went downhill after it sold in about 1998. The Japanese one was quite good the several times I ate there. Probably the location and its small size. Ricksha had been around forever as had the upstairs one. Sad to see long-standing places go out of business but I'm glad some of the smaller places are surviving. The "bakery" serves bento boxes for lunch Fridays and Saturdays unless that's changed too.
