Hurray for a San Antonio that is just a little safer for everyone!!! And for the opponents: Don't worry, you'll be just as free to express yourselves as those in Dallas, Houston, El Paso, Austin, and Ft. Worth are, even after their cities passed similar ordinances.
How was San Antonio not a safe place before? Is there any evidence of this claim?

Here's the only real "study" of the issue:

Nondiscrimination laws help - San Antonio Express-News

If you've listened to the commentary surrounding the ordinance, you've heard plenty of tales of discrimination and even violence.

As a sibling of a gay man, I've seen the effects of the violence myself, although that was in another city (and a much more liberal one).

I know some people have a really hard time believing that being gay or transgendered can be really, really hard, but so be it. Nothing I can say will convince you.

I just don't think that the councilmember should vote by opinion poll... sometimes they need to look at the big picture. It is a difficult job.
I'm sure you are sincere in what you say, but I can only add that if you ignore the majority opinion of your electorate then you are not performing the job you were elected to do and as you suggested the next election will take care of that problem if your electorate so decides. Regardless the ordinance has passed so let's see how many baseless lawsuits people can file against business owners or others in the next 12 months looking for a fast buck.

Saw that it passed...even though the latest poll showed 60% of public was against it.

ALL people deserve equality.
This is the best post in the whole thread in my opinion. It is sad everyone was too busy griping to notice it.

Thanks SAAggiemom for making the most sense in this silly thread.

If you look on the backs of the red t-shirts that were passed out to the supporters of the ordinance downtown today you will see an advertisement for a law office. Gee you think they might be trolling for lawsuits to file?
