Greetings,

A statistical book called America's Top Rated Cities contains San Antonio. However, it lists it as one of America's Dirtiest Cities and cities Travelandleisure.com September 2012.

Do you disagree? A cousin of mine in Dallas disagrees, but I would like more opinions. fyi, I live in New York, and if you have seen the trash piled here on the city streets or the litter on the underground subway, I think you will understand what I consider dirty.

Thanks!

I never thought it was dirty. Some of those top ten lists are very inaccurate. It's what passes for news now. I know you said it was a book - but I am guessing "the research" is as shallow.

Genuine question: Why exactly would someone from NYC be so interested in where San Antonio ranked in some book from almost two years ago?

Littering is horrible here. Sad part is it's gotten better since I moved here 17 years ago. It's one of the worst things about San Antonio, and something the city is working on.

I don't know about littering, but Graffiti is pretty bad in San Antonio
I always felt like at least 1/2 of San Antonio looked somewhat ghetto

That word gets thrown around as loosely as "nazi" or "hitler" at a Presidential protest.

BTW, it's tagging, not graffiti. Graffiti is an art form. Tagging is young disrespectful youths or gang members vandalizing public and private property.

I wish the city would change their "Wipe out Graffiti" campaign to "Wipe out Tagging".

Graffiti - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary
Actually graffiti isn't an art form. It's defacement of someone else's property.

San Antonio is much dirtier than other metro areas I have lived in. It just takes a quick drive on any of the major highways in the area to see this. There is trash everywhere. Littering is a problem in San Antonio, as is debris falling out/off of vehicles. There seems to be a large delay involved in the city/county/state clearing debris from the major roads. I have seen mattresses on the side of I-10/I-35 that have stayed just off the shoulder of the right of way for months. (Yes, it was reported via the 311 online service request site)

Graffiti is not an art form. It is vandalism, a crime. While it is true, there are some talented artists that produce graffiti, it is still vandalism.

Dirty diapers left in shopping carts. Or parking lots. Or sidewalks in front of fast food places. I have not seen that anywhere else but San Antonio.

Driving down any major road you will often seen tossed out beer bottles and cans, and the cardboard containers they come in. My old neighborhood had a huge tagging problem which does contribute to a dirty look and feel. But it's not everywhere (yet). It's also not necessarily contained to a particular side of town.
