Off of Potranco here also, takes other half 15-30 minutes depending on day and time to get to Lackland. Schools here, Murnin, Luna and Stevens.

You should also check out Alamo Ranch-it's beautiful out there! My husband works at Lackland and it takes 30 minutes from Braun and 1604. So anything between Seaworld and Braun Road should make for a 30 min. or less commute

Basically, anywhere north of 90 west and 1604 all the way across Loop to the northeast side is doable; however, the majority of folks live within that area that runs across 1604 from 90 west to IH-10 north and that is a 30-minute commute or less. I go into work at 0600 on Security Hill (which is on the southern end of Lackland AFB) and make it in 20-25 minutes, and I live outside of 1604 off of Braun.

If you are looking to "get out of the city" and live somewhere smaller, you may want to check out Castroville. It is a straight shot out on 90 and takes about 20 minutes without traffic.

Cheers! M2

Thanks for all the replies.
To answer some of the questions. I think I want to rent a home instead of buying being in the military and having to move I just don't want to take the chance of getting stuck with two mortgages. I will be working at wilford hall as a nurse so I am sure I will be leaving at non-peak times to and from work (hopefully)
Again thanks for all of your replies.

Lots for rent in the Westcreek area. (Outside 1604 north of Potranco, south of military dr.) My husband is a nurse at Wilford Hall and gets to work in about 20-25 minutes.

nisd, Ott/Luna/Stevens -- you have to be careful about SA schools -- if they are too crowded you will be sent to another school until there is room in your "home" school (they call this capped). Ott caps to Galm which is also a good school.

Default Buy if you can...

Cynt77--

I would definitely recommend buying if I were you. I am former military myself and I can tell you that the market here is a great deal with price points from 100K to 300K+. No, I'm not into real estate but you'll be here 3-4 years minimum right? If that's the case, just buy a spec home and build the equity and sell when you leave. Just think about how much money you'll throw away in that time for rent. Just do the math and you'll see it'll be worth it. You don't get crazy appreciation here but you'll see 5-7% on average a year...slow but steady unlike Cali and the NE (I lived in both places). Hope this helps!

Jason

We also second the Westcreek area and love the fact we can both make it to work in under 15 minutes even in rush hour.

I wrote in a different post back in March but we're moving to Lackland at the end of May. My husband will also be working on Security Hill. We've been thinking of living to where our children can attend Helotes Elem. or Beard Elem. Do you think we could find a house over 2000sq ft. and around
150,000? These schools seem to be the best in the area.

Also, are the taxes going to be too much? I've heard they are high in this area.
I want as much advice about moving to this area as possible. It's getting closer to our time to be there.

Basically I want the best schools for my 5yr old, and 8yr old plus a not so bad commute and a house for around 150, 0000.
