They are lucky.. had they broke into my house... they would have left in a meat wagon...

San Antonio metro had a population of nearly 2 million.

Uniform Crime Reports 1995-2007
Los Angeles county as of 2007, has a population of 9.8 million, not 13 million.

By the way, what was the point of the thread besides bash San Antonio?

According to Wikipedia the LA Metro, not just county, had 13 million.

The point is to raise awareness to the problems this city is having in terms of all types of crimes.

I think all of the responses are good ones. The ideas about police changes are excellent. However, when it comes specifically to the crime of murder, the police usually only become involved after the fact. Unless we live in a "Minority Report" world, the prevention of murder is going to be extremely hard. Apprehension and prosecution of said murderer would be easier with an increased plice presence, but not prevention.

As far as gangs in San Antonio, they are fueled by the drug trade. That is their bread and butter. It is how they buy the weapons they use to kill each other and innocent bystanders. I can attest to this having lived "in the trenches" so to speak. San Antonio is a corridor for marijuana, cocaine, and meth amphetimines. The gangbangers thrive financially while there is a drug problem in San Antonio.

This is not an issue specific to San Antonio, though. Dallas/Fort Worth is rampant with marijuana and meth. Houston is a major recipient of drugs trafficed over the border and through San Antonio. San Antonio has actually been spared much of the massive gangland killings because we are comparatively small to other cities like Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, a place I have lived, there are so many cultural divides between neighborhoods, the individual gang sets number in the hundreds. San Antonio is limited in its gangland diversity. Thus, it is a rarity for multiple gangland murders to occur in one night because they are all having to live under the rule of the big fish (i.e. Mexican Mafia and MS-13).

Even with all that said, erradicating drugs and gangs is not going to eliminate the crime of murder. Humans have propensity to kill. We've been killing living things for thousands of years. The more people you gather together in one place, the more likely that a few of them are going to kill one or more of the rest of the population. For the most part, the only thing that will stem that is the fear of dying themselves. Hence, I carry a SIG P220 .45 caliber pistol. It's not a solution to crime, but it's a deterant. That's a fact.

The link you gave was for LA County murders, not LA metro murders.

San Antonio compared to almost all metro areas this size or larger, is safe.

Though, there is more to just murder when it comes to safety/crime, but since you started this thread as "murder" specific. In 2007, San Antonio had a lower murder rate per 100,000 people than Charlotte.

Charlotte.

I think the point of this thread is not to bash San Antonio but to be informed so we can try to make a change. I think we can all agree that we want the safest place to live. As for the gang shootings- unfortunately lots of innocent bystanders are killed in these type of crimes too. Yes we all love San Antonio, but it would be great if we could all help make it a little safer!

Also, the number of murders in 2008 is down compared to the number of murders in 2007.

Within reason. I would much prefer to use a cell phone than my pistol.
