My husband is considering a job transfer that will be located in the Fontana/Rancho Cucamonga area so we are looking for information before deciding if we are interested in making the move. Are there specific parts of the city or area that we should avoid? We are hoping he will not have to make a long commute so is there any family oriented communities within a 30-40 minute radius? We do have two young children so would love to have good schools/parks nearby if possible. Any recommendations would be wonderful since we have never been to the area and live out of state so it is hard to tell just by looking online......every cities homepage makes them sound great.....

I am moving to a job in Fontana and I went with a relocation specialist on a tour of Rancho Cucamonga and I have to say it is quite a nice town if you like a masterplanned community with shops and residential area. There are also excellent schools in Rancho Cucamonga. The relocation specialist described Rancho Cucamonga as being the new, Inland Empire version of Irvine, CA. (Irvine is a really nice town in Orange County if you weren't familiar with it) North Fontana I hear is also quite nice. There are also some other nice, family-oriented communities nearby (within 45 minute commute) such as Upland, Claremont, Pomona, Chino Hills, Diamond Bar, Walnut, south Corona that you might want to take a look at. There are also some nice, less crowded communities to the east of Fontana/RC. There is another thread on areas to avoid in the IE that you might want to take a look at as well. Probably best to rent an apartment for a year while you look around for the best community to settle down in. I would've rented an apartment in RC except my wife got a job in Riverside so we headed south a bit to Eastvale as a nice midpoint between our jobs. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks so much for the info! Sounds like there are more "good" choices than I was aware of. Being such a large/populated area I was afraid of my husband getting stuck with a horrible commute.....ugh!

Not that I live there yet (so please take my words with a grain of salt) but in general you want to live to the west of Fontana to avoid the west bound traffic flowing towards LA in the morning and the east bound traffic flowing out of LA in the evening. Anyone else living/working in the Fontana area have any thoughts on this?

You don't want to live in Fontana anyway. Try to live in Rancho Cucamonga or Upland and life will be fine. Rancho Cucamonga a 'masterplanned' community? That's news to me and I doubt that.

My family lives in Northern Fontana now and are looking to move. It is beautiful at the base of the mountains and our children go to Etiwanda schools which are excellant. However...the sports field we have to play at is covered in graffiti. So you have the good parts mixed with the bad parts. Rancho Cucamonga is very nice and so is Upland. We are looking to move to Texas at the end of the year. I have two horses and want a place to keep them. Utah is so pretty...I don't know why you would want to leave there...but if it's a work thing I guess I understand. Good Luck to you...oh and avoid Pomona!!!

I have lived in N. Fontana for 10 years+. There is a real difference between north and south. We have a lot of transplanted Angelino's here and they've brought some of that culture with them. With the risk of being called racist I have to tell you if you are white you will be a minority anywhere in Fontana. My son has had a tough time of it. He's presently in high school and is constantly being referred to in derogatory racial terms. He has grown up with most of these kids and they were friends before high school but now they are distant with each other. Rancho is more evenly mixed and not nearly as bad, but there are still issues. There is an older side and a newer side with the older side to the south. Upland is much better but it's more expensive.

Not sure if you've moved yet or not but here goes...

We lived in Rancho Cucamonga for ten years (and still visit occasionally) and loved it. The proximity to the beach, desert and mountains was great. Rancho Cucamonga itself has plenty of shopping and restaurants to keep your day-to-day life running smoothly.

We didn't have kids in the schools, so I can't speak from personal experience on that. Our friends said that the schools there were better than most other parts of California.

I agree with the other posters that you'd be better off not living in Fontana. It was bad in the 1990's and seems to have only gotten worse since. Plus, commuting from west-to-east is a whole lot easier than the other way around. I used to drive from RC to Claremont (eight miles) on surface streets and it took at least thirty minutes every morning.

In Upland or Rancho Cucamonga - try to live as far north as possible. You'll get away from the crowds (and most of the crime) this way.

Good luck!

Upland or Rancho (north of Foothill blvd. on both citys away from the ghetto, yes even Rancho and Upland have a ghettos) is your best bet, maybe La Verne or Claremont both citys 5 miles west of Rancho across the LA County line but probably more money just for the fact its LA County...I would stay away from Pomona,Chino,Fontana, and Ontario. I cant speek for Fontana but I grew up in Ontario and the only nice area in the whole city is the east part next to the mall all other areas in Ontario is ghetto and crime ridden, especially the southern part...good luck.
