If you want a family area I also recommend Del Sur or even 4S Ranch. Not too far from the ocean either so it cools down more than say Scripps Ranch. La Jolla isn't really a family area in my opinion, neither is Solana Beach or Mission Hills ( some might disagree here, I'm sure)

How hot does the Scripps Ranch area get?

My theory has been to add a degree for every mile inland you go. It's not exactly right but that's about how it feels. In the "winter" you can subtract a degree for every mile inland.

In the winter and spring, it's about 2-3 degrees warmer than the coast in the daytime. At night, it's very similar to the coast.

In the summer, it can get up to 8 degrees warmer than the coast in the daytime. But the summer nights are great. Haven't needed A/C yet at night, and only a couple of times in the daytime.

Depends on what you want. In the 850-950k range you can get a smaller house in one of SD's most exclusive areas, the central beaches, Mission Hills, Kensington, etc... or a very large house in a more cookie-cutter area. Good schools will pretty much put you in private schools in the city areas. Personally if I had that kind of money to spend I would be looking mostly at Point Loma, La Jolla, possibly Encinitas. The idea of spending 900k on a tract home is not attractive to me.

Del Mar.....but I think it would take you a little longer then 30 minutes to get downtown...depending on what time you leave I guess

Stay away from La Jolla, try Mission Hills or Point Loma (if you can find something in your price range)

Point Loma would put him in a 5-10 minute commute.

What areas would you rank as the best in the San Diego city limits? I'm not worried about commute times or schools. I would imagine La Jolla, Mission Hills and Pt Loma to be toward the top.
