I used to think that boycotting organizations I didn't agree with was the right path. But then I realized that if I did that, in our era of consolidation there would be nowhere left to go.

This video cracked me up. Filmed in LA last year I think:

Chow Down (at Chick-fil-A) - YouTube

***most of my friends straight and gay are conflicted about Chickfila too.

In-N-Out has never taken a stance on gay marriage or anything really. They just print the reference for the verse, not actual verses. Most people don't even know they are there. Considering how busy all the stores are most people seem to not care.

In-N-Out pays their employees very well and have good benefits. Store managers can easily make over $100K a year there. Isn't paying and treating thousands of employees well more important than the fact they print some references to bible verses in really small font on their packaging?

As for Chick-Fil-A it's just the president and probably a few top brass that have come out publicly with these views, which was a bad move on there part as they should have just stayed neutral. But being against gay marriage doesn't mean you're anti-gay either.

I just don't believe in punishing workers for a few corporates big wig's views, especially when they treat and pay their employees very good overall. I don't agree with the President's stance but this whole "think like me or else" type attitude so prevalent in the Bay Area is fairly intolerant imo.

They're all over Southern CA already and have been for years. There is one in Fairfield and a few in Sacramento too. I don't think most people care enough to boycott them. Perhaps the Bay Area will have a higher percentage of people that boycott them but I doubt it will make much of a difference at all, when does it ever really?

Totally disagree. I will spend my money where I feel comfortable spending it. No Domino's (not a sacrifice), no Chic-Fil-A, which IS.

If I recall, Chcikfila actually good pay/benefits. My high school friends who worked there were happy. It wasn't like McDs where 15 year olds worked overnight shifts. They were very fair. (And of course the church goers were even happier since they closed on Sundays, so no no conflict from that perspective.)

So all in all, they aren't horrible from an employee perspective. But I hate when businesses mix opinions and politics. It is irrelevant to the job at hand, in their case selling tasty chicken.

My dad (generally socially conservative) is anti-gay mariage for now. His dad was a minister. He doesn't have a problem with gay people, and has some gay friends. He thinks being gay is "weird" as in I wouldn't choose this for myself, but it doesn't mean you are a bad person. He still thinks marriage is for men and women, but doesn't have a problem with "domestic partnership"-type benefits.

But considering the Chickfila founders are definitely southern good-old-boys so I imagine they have some very specific opinions on gay marriage and gay people. But of course, what does any of this have to do with running a business.

Agreed. It was a dumb part of their move and it's unfortunate that the President's views will be reflected on invididual franchise owners.

It can be viewed as significant if you (customer) are contributing to an organization (business) that funds PACs that seek to impact public policy. If the Chik-fil-A brass are known to financially support groups that lobby legislative bodies against the rights of gays, many more people would have a problem with them. It is an election year, after all.

Citizens United changed things a bit, in this regard. Businesses are more active in lobbying government, as are the watchdog groups that monitor them. Business owners publicizing potentially controversial opinions need to recognize this, as it may have repercussions on their bottom line.

Isn't that conclusion just a little too nonsensical?
