Seems the problem is that Oaklanders are expected to own the crimes of their dangerous neighborhoods as much as SFers do theirs. Meanwhile, reporting papers go out of their way to compartmentalize crime in SF, highlighting districts whereas in Oakland, it's just Oakland (no mention of what district typically). What happens then is that the whole of Oakland is then stigmatized as opposed to certain areas, which of course is patently unfair when someone from SF can just brush it off as something that mainly happens in the Tenderloin or Bayview or (take your pick). Now add into the mix preconceived notions which arose from mainly ignorance, if not help from lazy news reporting and you have an unfair situation where a bad apples in Oakland ruin the entire basket while in SF, people will pick through and sometimes even consume the bad ones... Anecdotally, it seems people don't want to spend the time going beyond the "Oakland is dangerous" branding, which is sad. Oakland deserves better...

All good points, but the irony is so many Oaklanders who love their city and sell it at every opportunity to outsiders will eventually be priced out by those very people they originally wanted to impress upon. The "well-kept secret" really isn't well-kept, and the anti-Oakland trolls are actually doing the current residents a service, though it will only keep over-gentrification away for so long.

They brought in a consultant to help the city, former LOS ANGELES Police Chief, William Bratton for $250,000. We'll see what effect he has by the end of this year. My bet is Oakland's crime still increases. They just don't have the resources or man power. But Oakland could learn a thing or two from the way Los Angeles has reduced its crime so we'll see.

Like Miami, you only have to truly worry if you're in certain neighborhoods. Everywhere else in Oakland and SF would be common-sense stuff, like being aware of your surroundings and not yaking on your I-Phone on the street where someone can take advantage.

Ok, but. . Bear with me man...look at crime reports. Com

Look at miami

Then look at either sf or oakland

I see a huge difference. That's why i am concerned about what measures have been taken to improve the situation.

Will be in SF this Saturday, will i survive? lol

Sorry, it wouldn't load on my computer here at work. I understand your reservations, but you just have to trust locals that most crime is located in certain areas, between criminals themselves, and any other random robbery-type crime could happen to you anywhere, in any city.
For SF, you should stay away from Sixth Street below Mission, avoid the Tenderloin (roughly west of Mason until Polk, between Market & Geary), and if you go to the Mission stay west of Mission Street at least at night.
