I have a friend who can no longer afford West Oakland and is thinking of moving to Bay Point because of the Bart access and cheap rent. She asked me what Bay Point is like, and to be honest I've only gone past Bay Point on the freeway and don't have much insight into what it's actually like to live there.

In terms of crime, it's one of the worst places in Contra Costa County.

Well it's probably not any worse than where they're coming from as far as crime but definitely one of the least desirable places in the area. I don't think the crime is as bad as Antioch but that's not saying much.

Is it worst than West Oakland? If Bay Point doesn't pan out she may have the leave the Bay Area. She's lived in West Oakland for the last 5 years so I think she can handle it.

As someone who lived in West Oakland for about five years, I wouldn't ever move to Bay Point. So there's that.

I actually think Pittsburg would actually be a better choice for her. I have friends that live in Pittsburg and actually like it. Last time I was there, they were redoing and building up the whole downtown area near the harbor...it was quite nice actually. Tons of new condos, and at the time there was a bike race through town, and I think they even have a farmers market. Bay Point and Antioch seem to have more issues with crime.

Consensus on Bay Point? It's a pit.

I lived in Bay Point when it was still known as West Pittsburg. Would not move back.

I agree that Pittsburg proper may be a better bet.
