"Sarcasm" seems to be lost on most people here. They all look at me with blank stares when I make a sarcastic joke or comment.

Say "thats gay" your called out as a homophobe.

People give you stares of disaproval if your the type of person that looks like to have somewhere to go, commitments to make, likes to dress up for business etc. Just no sense of working to "get ahead". What gives? Do people here just prefer others to be as miserable, non-goal oriented, aim-less and broke as they are?

Overall the people in this area seem to lack alot of aspects of character and tend to be very introverted and quiet. I also see theres less of an energy here. Everything from major stores to mom and pop shops to restaurants closes early and people don't seem to care. Even nightclubs close early (WTF?).

Anyways I was just venting. Personally I think the weather is great here, but I like the east coast better in terms of the relationships, people and the overall attitude of most people. I just gel well with folks who are more honest about themselves and know how to stick up for themselves without complaining or crying. Those types are usually laughed out of New York City. Its very soft.

How can people live like this day and day out and not go crazy?

I am from S.F. and lived in NYC for over 15 years. San Franciscans are not soft we just don't really give a fig about the fact you are from the East coast and everything is better on the "right coast" and you can't find any decent pizza let alone good pizza, and you and your buddies love to go to strip clubs where the girls don't have tattoos, and you wish you could get take out at any hour, and you didn't know that so many Asians speak English so well. Yup, I have heard it all. Maybe the problem isn't that San Franciscans are too soft but we meet a lot of East coasters with the same issues that you have. The West coast may not be good fit. I am just saying...

Not to mention an adult saying "that's gay."

I'm not sure what "so soft" means. Polite? As in--not rude? Is that a bad thing?

They don't get sarcasm? Who doesn't get sarcasm? Last I checked, sarcasm was alive and well around the Bay. Though it's more of a teen and college student thing. Some people mature beyond that.

"Passive-aggressive"? I thought that was Seattle. The OP will have to explain that one. And btw, OP: sarcasm is a passive-aggressive form of humor. Which is why it's popular with grown adults in Seattle.

No sense of working to "get ahead"? Seriously? All those people in the tech industry who put in 80-hr. weeks, all those inventors who are now multi-millionaires, all the lawyers in the FiDi, bringing their work home in the evenings striving to make "partner", the entrepreneurs, the students working full-time and going to school full-time.... who does the OP hang out with, the homeless? Where does the OP find his slacker friends?

I wonder if the OP will bother to revisit his thread.

The key to life?

Be raised in South Boston, harden up by default, get rich, move to San Fran and settle.

I'm joking but the happiest, hardest, most respectable people I know had a life story of exactly that.

Human nature is a funny thing.

Oops. This is a 4-yr. old thread that a new member dug up last week.

Nothing to get excited about. We can all go home, now.

Wait, we must do an update on how soft people in SF are today, and how "real" NY transplants are. Thoroughly intriguing stuff.

Most have already moved back by now so they can get a good "pie". Hope they can find an apartment in Brooklyn now.

Nope, blew their wad on SF studios, got mad about it, returned to mom's basement in Queens.

Grewup in sf and own property there. Spent time NY as well. Much prefer NY and find it a lot easier to meet people and make friends.

Love the weather in sf but there's just so much more going on in NY.

Anyone in need of "more going on" than can be found in SF, might want to look into medication for ADHD.
