The other neighborhoods are just about the same. Marina at least has some well dressed people!

You mean the SF daytime population goes up? I thought people commute out of SF to work in peninsula/south bay. You are talking about a 250,000 increase in SF population in day time. Is there even 250,000 jobs in the city???

Yes, that is what i mean. Why do you find this hard to believe? Look it up on google if you don't believe me, the numbers are there...they might even be somewhere on this very website, though i've never checked.

SF's population goes up during the day, sometimes dramatically. Besides everyone who commutes in to work in the financial district, the number of tourist also contribute on any given day. I wish I could find the numbers for this but I heard that SF's population can go from the near 800 million it has to about one and a half million, in a 7 mile by 7 mile area. Now that's some population density for you.

yes - big cities and smiling at strangers can actually lead to problems, it all depends on your gut feeling in my opinion

^ I think he's right. Smiling at the "wrong" stranger can be dangerous. Your attracting the wrong attention. In big cities this is amplified.

But I understand OP too. Alot of times people in SF can be in their own little world and seem rather callous or snooty. Basically they think they are more important than they actually are and act pretentious about it. But its OK to smile once in a while, even to complete strangers who don't otherwise seem threatening.

Yeah, I really don't understand the day to day stresses of living in a big city like SF, since I don't have to live there. If I had to deal with the traffic, congestion, parking and crowding, I doubt I'd be smiling all the time, either.

Even the beginning part of a day trip where I'm trying to find a lot can be a minor, but still significant pain.

As far as a couple of people's comments to me personally about SF not having attractive women, I find that to be a bunch of malarkey. btw, the dudes who were telling me this were themselves butt ugly. Go figure.

People are scared and have little hope, especially in a secular society that puts it's faith in lawyers and politicians...if you are not smiling or laughing or enjoying yourself ...then you just might be scared, depressed and miserable. If it looks like a duck, and acts like a duck...it is not an eagle.
