It's not really well integrated. It's more like everyone mutually coexists without bothering each other. It's certainly better than people being at each others' throats, but it's not the same as being truly integrated.

Agree. As immigrants move in, they identify pockets of the valley and concentrate in them with their own. Nothing weird or surprising about that.

If more Americans did better at learning STEM stuff, companies might be more interested in hiring natives.

I thought that the eastside neighborhoods in San Jose were pretty integrated between Asians and Latinos, with Anglos more separated in the west (and the black population very small).

Because of all the immigration, San Jose/Santa Clara County is a great food place, at least for Asian and Mexican food. There are foodies who will tell you it's better than San Francisco.

San Jose might be a poster child for what's been called "dense sprawl." The population weighted density of Santa Clara County--the average density people live at--is 8,418 people per square mile. That's 6th highest in the country, after New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, and Chicago. But people and jobs tend to spread out relatively uniformly in multiple directions. That makes for weak transit corridors and auto-dominated commuting. The strongest transit corridor in the county is the bus corridor on El Camino Real.

Really interesting map. San Jose is much more integrated racially than SF or Oakland is, even though the latter two cities are known to be more racially tolerant. The map does not back this up.

It really is no surprise given the history of the US that we have these neighborhood enclaves full of different ethnic groups. San Jose is the exception and is rather mixed.

Exactly. San Jose has been pretty integrated for many years. In 1972, we bought a new home in a nice area of San Jose. On our cul de sac there were 11 families. Two of the families were Philipino, 2 were Mexican, 1 was Portuguese, 1 was Black, 1 was mixed Turkish/American, 1 was mixed Mexican/American, 1 was mixed Italian/Mexican, and 2 were American White. We had a similar mix when we purchased a new home in 2002. We all socialized together. Now that is pretty integrated compared to other cities.
