4. Historic Savannah Foundation - Its creation dovetailed with a surge in interest in historic preservation in the country at large. Spearheading the charge was the Rockefeller family, who singlehandedly saved Williamsburg and countless other historical sites beginning in the 1930's; their philanthropy galvanized preservation efforts in Charleston, New Orleans and Savannah.

3. SCAD - Whereas the movement to save historic residential properties was well underway prior to SCAD's arrival, it was they that got the ball rolling on rehab and reuse of Savannah's commercial building stock.

2. Paula Deen - Clearly she was instrumental in making Savannah a household name and helping to craft the romantic image that it enjoys today.

1. NYT being one of its biggest cheerleaders for decades now.

None of these factors add up to what Savannah has done on its own merits.
Lest we forget, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: A Savannah Story” was No.1 on the New York Times’ bestseller list for a record 49 months (216 weeks) and remains the longest-standing New York Times Best-Seller in history. Which basically means that for 4 years in the 1990s, a book about Savannah was THE most-read book in New York City ... if not the entire country. In this day of electronic devices, I think it’s safe to say that feat will never be repeated again.

What does Pittsburgh have to do with this thread?
And yes, Pittsburgh has patina. Layers upon layers of it.

Well, about the same thing as a line from an old movie "The French connection" when a detective asks "Did you ever pick your nose in Pittsburg" (or was it Philadelphia ?) No matter all the same. lol

I met a woman while crabbing last week. Early in the morning it was just the two of us and we got to talking . Where you from? Well I just came back to SAV from San Antonio. So? Well I was born in "Slovanna" and I like this kind of life. And can you imagine you NEVER see water in San Antonio. How can anyone live in a place that like?

Couldn't agree more.

Hahaha! This is hilarious.

I used to go crabbing, myself, when I was younger, at the Wilmington Park dock. I was much more successful crabbing than I ever was fishing.
