So, come on, let me have it...what are the negatives? I understand access/transportation is a problem, but we work from home. Anything else? Help this WS fangirl out, because I just might do something crazy like buy a house there. If you hate it, tell me why! If you love it, sit here in this thread with me drinking root beer floats while we wax poetic about ferry boats.

I'd especially love to hear from anyone who grew up there or is raising kids there.

I've been here for 5 years, can see the ferry out my window.

West Seattle is ok. meh

Housing is old, moldy, and ridiculously overpriced. But if this is where you want to sink your next 30 years of wages, your choice. And best of luck.

I have nothing negative to say. I have a friend that rented there for a short time, loved it so much that she bought a house there when prices were down. She got a huge house with great water views and loves it.

Dang if you don't have to leave the house and you like it a lot ... what's bad?

(there are worse obsessions to have ... I think there's a whole TV show for people who eat weird things like kleenex)

I always thought WEst Seattle seemed nice and much more affordable than the rest of the city without all the crime you would have on the Southside. If I had to live in Seattle I would choose Greenwood, however, although West Seattle I think has the edge with scenario and water views. The traffic isn't so bad in the area and parking is quite a bit easier.

As long as you don't have to commute into Seattle West Seattle is great. You have walkable areas for shopping and restaurants, with icons like Salty's and the Luna Cafe, parks, beach, views, and as long as you are not too far south, low crime. Real sense of community. Keep up with events and problems there: West Seattle Blog…

I think the water might just be the thing...you can see it so much over there.

I actually like Greenwood, too. But West Seattle just warms my heart.

Northeast Seattle has been nice, but the vibe is off for me here in Ravenna.

Hemlock140: I read that blog more than a non-WSer probably should.

We love West Seattle, and would have probably bought there if it wasn't for my husband's job in Everett. I love that it feels like its own small town. Some great restaurants, bars and grocery stores, it's quiet, the views can be beautiful, it's more affordable than many Seattle neighborhoods with similar housing stock, and I love all of the craftsman homes. Potential minuses: those older houses are small and of course will require a lot of upkeep, the schools aren't the greatest, and there is some crime that makes the drive from White Center/South Seattle. Oh, and the commute into Seattle is going to get terrible once the viaduct comes down...it's already pretty bad.
