Hello all, first time posting in the sports forum.
I am a native Wisconsin resident still going to University here for a few more years. I am a big fan of soccer and my friends typically are too. Overall though soccer popularity in Wisconsin is fairly below average. Its not dead like it is in more southern parts of the USA but most people here only say they played as a kid and don't know much to converse as far as players and teams go.
So I was wondering which state or area is really big on soccer based on experience?
Proper criteria would be:
-youth soccer participation
-knowledge of domestic and international teams and players
-attendance in professional games
-casual soccer at a park or field is everyday common
-potential rising talent pool
-Dare I say... perhaps more popular than American football?
Soccer is played at the youth level everywhere. Seattle has the best regular numbers as far as MLS goes. At this point, though, I don't think you could say one area in the United States is the "most popular".
-We support DC United quite well despite not having a soccer-specific stadium.
-We always have high attendance when club giants come around or international matches occur.
-We have a high percentage of ex-patriots here who of course prefer soccer.
-We have alot of adult leagues and adult pickup going on.
-We have the usual high participation in youth soccer.
All in all, sometimes I think only American football is bigger here

Well I do mate, but alot of soccer fans come out of the wood work when ManU, Barca, Chelsea, Costa Rica or the US natl team come to town. I mentioned Costa Rica, but it could be Jamaica, El Salvador, whoever, if they have Intl matches in DC, the crowd will be dominated by fans of those nationalities.
But I'm just quoting fact, DC United averages about 15,000-20,000/match depending on the season, and the big showcases can pull 40,000-60,000!
And if we could get only get a soccer-specific stadium for DC United, every match could be a sell-out!
TBH 20,000 a game for a city with a population of 617,996 and in a country with more popular sports isn't bad. That's roughly the same size as Glasgow though and Glasgow has 4 teams (Celtic, Rangers, Patrick Thistle and Queens Park) so there is still more fans out there for DC no doubt!
We are from Wi also and I know what you mean! We now live in eastern Pa, about half way between Phillie and New York, so we have both teams close enough to attend. Youth soccer is huge here as are adult leagues. Many British transplants in the area as well to keep interest high. Love, love, love all the options
