Notice how Charleston have rocket past Columbia, and Sumter was once ahead of Summerville and Goose Creek. Hilton Head will bump Sumter down another notch way before the 2020 census. And I remember when Spartanburg was way up there, right after Greenville, I'm surprise how far they have dropped.

Amazing how cities with a lower population than Sumter get retail developments we wish we had. Excluding HiltonHead and Mrytle Beach which are tourist magnets.

Remember about county populations! All those towns below Sumter on the list have higher county populations. Aiken is near Augusta (17 miles away) while Sumter is kind of isolated a little bit, being 40 miles from Columbia. The mix of Sumter's location and its county population along with a couple other factors make for reduced development.
Remember, it is the area population that matters. For all you can know, you can have a city, with a lot of towns around it who are serviced by it, influencing development in that city.

They all have a much larger county population to draw from. Every single town on that list below Sumter in population, is located in a county with a population greater than Sumter County. Also, the majority of them are a part of one of South Carolina major metro areas. North Charleston and Mt. Pleasant, are both in Charleston county. You have the number 1, 3, and 4 largest cities all in the same county. And Summerville and Goose Creek, the numbers 7th and 8th largest cities are suburbs in the Charleston metro.

Exactly, Plus Sumter is surrounded by two of the smallest counties in the state, and the rural part of Richland.

Actually, Aiken’s Counties population in 2010 was 160,000.
Seems like a good concept so far... I like the fact that they are emphasizing housing including potential student housing behind Central Carolina on S. Harvin Street.. Adding bodies downtown is the key to supporting everything from retail, events, to jobs....

I am sure we will be reminded by all of our resident demographers that on these Boards that a city's population inside it city limits is not a reflection of its true population.. To Sumter's credit.. if everything in the "urbanized area" was annexed into the city limits.. the City's population could increase and hover around the 60k or 70k mark as should Florence.. By that same token Greenville and even Rock Hill would be likely well over 100k and places like Spartanburg could easily top 90,000... Strict annexation laws is what is constraining most SC Cities...Columbia certainly would have in upwards of 200,000 people as would Charleston. you can look at the populations of their Counties to get a sense of the overall population around some of these centers though you have to factor in that the city's population is also included in the County population count.
A friend of mine said she was just in Camden and apparently they are getting a Hobby Lobby and a Marshalls!... grrr.! I would think Sumter would be the better location for a Hobby Lobby. It's more central for all those who are too far from Florence or Columbia. Camden ain't that far from the one in Elgin. So I'm guessing Sumter will never get one then cz it'll be too close to Camden's.
