True...L'Enfant designed the layout of Buffalo (like DC..the fan). Olmstead designed Delaware park which is beautiful...
Syracuse has better topography...more hills. I just find Syracuse is RAPIDLY in decline. Buffalo has the blight...but the folks who live there are fiercely proud of the area..and it seems much more vibrant than Syracuse. I'm in Syracuse quite a bit and enjoy some of the eateries, but in truth even the Hill, Westcott, and Armory are very very small areas. Wescott especially...
Having said that...my preference for Buffalo is overshadowed by economic reality.
Unless there is an active movement by the state to keep BOTH of these areas economically viable..the death spiral of most of upstate NY is going to continue. I was more optimistic a couple of years ago..but seeing what is happening on a larger scale...I'm not so sure anymore.
I don't know about RAPIDLY in decline, as the whole coutry is feeling it right now. If anything, Buffalo has been hit harder. Keep in mind that it is a city that has lost more than half of it's peak population, while Syracuse has lost slightly over a third from it's peak population total.
I live in Dublin, Ireland, used to live in NYC, grew up in Syracuse. theres nothing wrong with upstate, how good your city is is mostly a state of mind, and if you live in an equivalent area in either you'll prob have a similar quality of life.
This is kind of a stupid argument, cities are all great for their own reasons.... even the run down ones for the kind of messy survivalism.
Parts of any city can be "iffy." I was just in Syracuse a month ago and the North Side is getting much better. I was born on the North Side, Greenland Drive. Its one block from Butternut and Webster School. That's still a nice area and has a strong neighborhood watch. Every city has its Pros and Cons, one big con of every city is the "iffy" factor. One big pro is the character.
The question is, Buff vs Syr. Syracuse Wins! Buildings in Syracuse are getting renovated and downtown has some really nice places to live. Franklin, Armory, & Hanover Square are beautiful and I would live there if I still lived in NY.

Thank you. I've been saying how there are still parts of the North side that are still really nice. I drive through that area at night after work and it is still a very nice area. Webster is still a good school too.
