I am considering getting and iPad or alternative, my choice would be something more along the lines of a non Apple product. I have a laptop at home which is not a Mac but I do have an iPhone.
Does anyone have suggestions for me? Do you think I'd be better off with an iPad? I really no nothing about this stuff and probably use about 5% of my iPhone's capacity.
Unless you have a specific need, any tablet will do.
Not sure about this. Different tablets can access software from different sources. Kindle, Google Tablet, iPad, off Chinese brands. Different accounts (play, apple, etc) I don't know the details but I remember we had a kindle and took it back (because of software hassles) to get the galaxy tab 2.
Good point , mostly chek email and surf the net, already have an iPhone and a kindle and would use this when I travel - I want something bigger than an iPhone.

If you already have an iPhone, you might as well get an iPad if you’re in the market for a tablet. That way your apps will sync across devices. Otherwise you’ll be buying apps, music, etc., twice.
If the $500 price tag is holding you back, look on Amazon for refurbished iPads. I recently got an iPad2 with a new screen in very good condition for a little over $300. The screen definitely isn't as crisp as more modern displays, but it works. Since you already have an iPhone, there will be zero learning curve and your current apps will work on it.

What you stated you wanted it for (in another post) almost every tablet can do. The Kindle is not included in that statement. I use an iPad because it does what I need better than the others. For what you need, the others may be just as good. Another poster had a good point about sharing apps with your phone. An iPad is probably your best bet. I love mine.
