Hisense Sero 7 Pro for $149 and sometimes $129 on sales is the best non Nexus low end tablet. And the Dell Venue 8 when it is on sale for $130 sometimes.

exactly, these are two examples that are nearly as good as the 2013 nexus 7 for about $50 cheaper or more just depends on your needs.
the Asus memo pad HD 7, 8 and 10" are another discount line that get really good reviews
What ever you do, DO NOT buy the Monster M7 Tablet from Walmart. While it may have good specs and it is $89-99 right now, there are numerous reviews of the power port falling out, so for every review that says its a great budget tablet, those same reviews come right back to say their power port came out the tablet.

The Nexus 7 has twice as much ram, twice as much memory, a much superior screen, faster cpu, runs an Android 2 versions newer, is slimmer, less wide, and less in height. The specs are too far apart to be considered nearly as good.

Thank you for this. For the small amount more the Nexus 7 costs over these competitors you are get a MUCH more capable device.

"Reasons to buy the Dell Venue 8"

I own the Nexus 7 (2012 +13) and my wife owns the Dell Venue 8. the Dell reminds me of the 2012 Nexus. The Nexus 7 (2013) is a great tablet, and it's definitely faster than the 2012 Nexus and the Dell but not by much, the only significant difference is the screen, and I keep mine at half the allotted brightness to stretch the battery.
I bought my wife the Dell the day before Thanksgiving for $159, 32 GB at Newegg

I should have been more clear. I was referring to the Hisense Sero 7 Pro that you claimed to be nearly as good as the current Nexus 7. It's not.
