I have never flown first class. However, my son was once upgraded to first class.
Interesting story. He was about 8 or 9 and was flying as an unaccompanied minor. My son said that when they moved him to first class the business man in the seat next to him complained to the stewardess even before he sat down. My son said that he just played with his wrestling action figures during the whole flight and the man next to him never said a word to him.
My son had no idea why he was moved to first class. Hmmm, I wonder why the stewardess moved him rather than an adult?
Because she felt like it. She has that authority. I wonder what was wrong with the fellow he sat next to.

I'd suspect that it's easier for flight attendants to keep an eye on him up in first class, as the ratio of staff to passengers is better.

Knowing there were other unaccompanied minors, the FA probably liked your son and decided to give him a free upgrade. That's all. An FA would not knowingly put a minor next to a problem passenger.
I have to call BS on this (and that seems the consensus here). International first class is usually along the lines of 5x or 10x the amount of coach unless you got some very extreme and very rare sale.

I travel on business, and am amongst the vast horde of semi-elite passengers who get upgraded on occasion, but not consistently. For me the principal difference between business/first and cattle-class is the shoulder room. I'm not a large man, or overweight, and leg-room or hip-room are never incommodious. But as a consummate weightlifter, my shoulders protrude from even the most generous coach-class seating (Qantas A380).
On flights between the US and Europe, it has become rare to obtain an upgrade solely on miles (United, my airline of "choice", typically requires a cash copay). But often the gate-agent will find for me a seat where the adjacent seat is empty - and that makes a staggering difference... literally.

Yep, I just got ORD LHR (roundtrip) for $3700 in lie-flat bed business class on BA when premium economy was $2200. Travel is in July.

Well, my son was (and is) a pretty gregarious guy. He may have just charmed a flight attendant who decided to move him rather than another unaccompanied minor or another passenger into first class.
Never, it is only 14 hours at the most, I would stand if they would let me if I could save money. Even me being 6'4", I do not find economy uncomfortable enough to fork over money for an upgrade for such a short amount of time.
I have had free upgrades though due to overbooking.

Wait till he is not a minor - he may be charming FAs on a regular basis :-)
