My SIL's (brother's wife) brother strangled his wife with his bare hands when she was packing to leave him, in front of their 2 small children. He paid his debt to society (20 years in prison), and I see him occasionally at family gatherings. I don't speak with him much. He may be out of prison, but not a person I want to associate with.
Yes, last year in a neighboring town a son (I believe he was 21 years old) shot his father, mother, younger sister, and then himself. We knew the mother and sister, who was a friend of my daughter's. There had been no other murders in this extremely safe city since 2005.
I had a great uncle on my moms side who was in Alcatraz. No one shared the details with me since I was a little kid and my mom tried to shield me from that side of the family ( the interesting side) but I'm pretty sure he wasn't in Alcatraz for shoplifting.
My grandfather was murdered. He owed the wrong people money. Again, Moms side of the family.

Ruined 3 people's lives and 20 years is his debt.
Effed up.

My uncle was murdered in the 70s....gambling with the wrong people...found him in an alley..rolled up in carpet in Detroit.....had 4 kids under the age of 6...tough on my poor aunt...
My first boyfriend when I was like 12 was murdered by a carnival worker at one of the shopping center carnivals in the late 70s.....
Our friend's son was shot and killed by his friend...both 19...drunk and playing with guns..then the friend buried him. And tried to cover it up....sad story....he only got 2 yrs in jail....
Funnily enough i was having this exact conversation a few weeks ago with some friends while having a few drinks and i had never thought of it before but on counting i realised i knew 6 people who have been murdered.
Mind you I grew up in Belfast in the 70s and 5 of those where 'troubles' related, 4 of them when I was a kid.
There was one case where I didn't know anyone directly involved, but I was acquainted with people who did know those involved. It was a totally senseless kind of crime. At a party some young people were having in an apartment, two young guys got into an argument over ownership of a box of discs (CD's or DVD's). One guy left the party, went home and got a gun, then went back and shot the other guy.
The victim's sister worked in a restaurant where I was a regular customer, so I knew her pretty well. I was taking classes at the time, at a college right in the local area. From patronizing the campus food venues, I was slightly acquainted with a woman who worked in a snack bar, whose son had driven the killer home to get his gun and then had driven him back to the apartment where the murder happened. Also knew another woman who worked at the college, who lived in the nearby town the murder victim and his sister were from originally. This woman's son knew the murder victim, and sometimes had shot hoops with him in pickup games around their neighborhood.
This all happened in a nice affluent suburban area, where people tend to believe that things like that just don't happen. This murder happened 11 years ago, and I'm pretty sure the town where it occurred hasn't had another murder since. No place is 100 percent safe.
