This is pretty sick. What kind of home must this kid have been raised in to think a gang rape of a drunk teenager is funny and worth so much frivolity?
The fact the girl was raped is horrible enough but the way these teens regard it is almost as bad. I am the mother of two 10 year old girls and already I am talking to them about the danger of drinking and how easy it is for girls to be out of control and have their lives ruined by drinking and criminal boys. I also have a grown son who was schooled early on about the dangers of alcohol.
What punishment if any would you recommend for these boys joking about such a serious crime?
First, in my opinion, the offenders need to be tried as adults; they need to be removed from their sports team, especially if sports is so important to them AND there is so much pomp and circumstance surrounding their athletes; once they are convicted and sentenced and after they have served their time, which should certainly be many years of incarceration, they should all be, as part of their conditions of release and parole, required to participate in X number of hours of community service in an environment that is reflective of the damage/results of violence against women, perhaps, working in a morgue, their actions should be noted in their school transcripts so it can follow them wherever they go and lastly they need to be on their state sex offender registry, permanently.
Alcohol is really not dangerous to drink. Just tell your girls not to drink to the point where they pass out. Quite frankly, I am curious as to why that victim drank so much to the point of passing out. Oh wait nevermind they drugged her
Yeh those boys need to put in prison for a long time. In a men's prison, why other dangerous criminals
One of the issues I always have when it comes to discussions of rape, is somehow, too many times, the victim gets blamed. Certainly it is unfortunate that the victim drank too much; that she was pretty much passed out. From the 'post-actions' of these teenagers, I could speculate that sure, they seized what they all thought was a golden opportunity; however, I could also speculate especially w/their comments and attitudes, that they could/would have done the same if they had an opportunity whether or not a victim had been drinking, or not.
In our current society, regardless of the fact that we are all supposed to be far more educated, savvy and sophisticated, there is still too many who blame the victim: something she wore, something she did not wear; being out too late; being in the wrong place; sending the wrong message, etc.
Personally, I do not care if a woman is a professional escort or 'call girl' -- if she is assaulted, if she is forced -- anything against her will - it needs to be called what it is: rape. Let's say this woman [professional escort] is grocery shopping, taking her bags to her car and loading up the car, someone comes from behind her in the parking lot, forces her into the car and assaults her, was she asking for it because she was grocery shopping and was alone in the parking lot, of course not just like anyone of us who could be grocery shopping and hopefully not, assaulted in the lot, but if it was learned that she was an escort, does that make it less violent and/or acceptable behavior.
It's a shame that none of the boys there were brave enough to sneak out and call the cops. Mob mentality I guess.
Back in the eighties when I was a teenager I had a house party and got pass-out drunk. You know what the scary looking punk-rock kids I was hanging out with did? They put me to bed and then cleaned the place up so my parents wouldn't bust me when they got home the next afternoon.
This is 100% the fault of the perpetrators. Being young and stupid, or being a prostitute, or a drunk is not an offense that should be punishable by sexual assault and brutality. That girl is going to need years of therapy.
Incidentally, the online group Anonymous is outing all the offenders that they can locate. Since some of the perps were minors (maybe all of them) so their names will not be released to the media. Anonymous is taking it upon themselves to track down and out these lovely people using social media and other internet resources.
I think we all agree the rapists should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. But what about the kids who are on the tape laughing about it, making the whole thing out to be a joke? Seems like the guy on tape may have even witnessed part of the attack. Should he be prosecuted as an accomplice if he did nothing to stop it? or if he knew about the rape after the fact and did not come forward to offer his testimony or information? His callousness has me really perturbed. Is this the macho posturing of young boys? Is this peer pressure? Mob mentality? or is he just an idiot?
I agree w/you no dudzu that rapists must be punished to the fullest extent of the law. I think, for the kids laughing about it, they need some kind of 'reality check' about accountability, what this horrible event did to the victim - they should be compelled [although I have no idea how to compel them] to be involved in some type of mandated community service, such as what I mentioned in my initial posting; if he/any of them knew about it, witnessed it and did nothing, yes, they should be arrested and charged with whatever crime is appropriate; if he knew about it after the fact and did nothing to report it, he too should be prosecuted.
I have attempted in the past to get a serious thread going about accountability, without, unfortunately, much success. I believe one of the greatest failings w/in our system [note: one of them] is the continued lack of accountability.
I understand about peer pressure/mob mentality and I understand it happens - I understand that kids can go through incredible pressure[s]; however, I don't care how much pressure there is - it is one thing to do a prank/a dare [as long as it does not hurt someone else] - this is about morals, ethics and character and, or in this case, a lack thereof.
Let them learn and get a strong lesson about what happens when you choose not to have any ethics, character or morals.

Most people are affected by alcohol LONG before they have drunk so much that they would pass out.
NK, what an awful story. I am really curious as to what will happen to the accused at trial. And I too think the bystanders should be charged with SOMETHING.
The gist of it being she was gang raped, possible her drink was spiked, but a teenage gang called, fittingly, "The Rape Crew", high school football players and elite white boys protected by the establishment - including the good old boy police network. The kids were released on bail and the sentences reduced to juvenile crimes.
The young male on film, who implicated himself in the rape, has yet to be arrested at all.
There is no excuse for this. At one of my hard drinking franternity parties in my college days we had a girl get crazy stumbling drunk on the verge of passing out. What happened? A fraternity brother calmy and soberly told her "I'm not going to hurt you", took her over her soulders, and put her to bed without harm where she was left to sleep it off.
