The thing about some folks is that they think a money tree is growing behind the capital building. Why do you think cuts were made? Because they're being mean to us? The money the government uses comes out of your and our pockets. When our pockets become empty, so does their's. It's plain stupid to spend money you don't have, just as it's stupid for the government to spend money it doesn't have. Somebody better do some cutting real fast before the rest of the world becomes tired of our whiny, spoiled, tantrum-prone, infighting little society and calls all those notes due. It's not just Oregon that's bankrupt, it's the whole country.

Yet some of the best average test scores and graduation rates. Perhaps just pumping money into education isn't what educates kids, it's the parent's support and the discipline they instill in their children.

Amen! Coming from CA I can say that spending well over 3 times as much per student isn't working. Our kids school is amazing here.

Utah has one of the most distinct, diverse cultures in the USA. Celebrate it, don't wish some horrible form of change on it.

By the way, we are still at the exploration stage.
Ok, I don't live in Utah but enjoy vacationing there, but I couldn't stop myself from laughing at the sentence in bold. Seriously OP, have you ever visited the east coast?

Why are certain ethnic groups excluded from 'diversity'?

What I meant by my comment was that Utah has Swiss, Swedish, American Indian, Norwegian, Hispanic, etc. ethnic groups. They also have ethnic celebrations; witness the Swiss Festivals in Midway and St. George, Scandinavian Festivals in Price, etc.

Religious diversity is less apparent, of course, but you can certainly find it.

Why so much emphasis on diversity anyway? We are a diverse household, but we are Americans first, and don't really worry that much about where we came from. Sure, we have a one day Swiss Festival here and yodel and put flowers on our dairy cows. We visit family in Mexico every year, but have no desire to contribute to 'la Raza'.

Diversity is a political buzzword, nothing more. Balkanization is more appropriate.

No, I have never been to the east coast USA.

Not to mention that UT as a whole is 'diverse" in that it is different from other states.

You summed up the point I have been trying to make in one sentence

Our Utah vacation starts in a few days, and we can't wait

Diversity is a political buzzword, nothing more.
Also the Scandinavian Festival in Ephraim, the Icelandic Festival in Spanish Fork, and the Scottish Festival in Payson. Lot's of diversity from cultures that ARE traditionally different. But, you know what? I'll bet not many see them as different. I wonder why? Clearly they are.

Which brings me to the good point you made. Not many folks would consider people/cultures from say France, Hungary, Ukraine, Finland, Iceland, Scotland, etc as being diverse at all. But, they are diverse. They are traditionally completely different cultures with completely different traditions and languages. Traditional cultures interest me; I like meeting people from other places; and I'm especially into languages. But as you said, "diversity" is the pet buzz word of the day and, IMO, is a hollow knee-jerk word that is often used as a tool to divide people rather than unite them. It seems to me that "diversity" is often a camouflaged synonym for Europhobia. Ultimately, although I love languages and different cultures, and our little cultural festivals are nice, I'm more into the undeniable fact that we are all "people" and we are all stuck on this lonely little globe together. We'd better learn how to live with each other rather than squabbling over history and proclaiming how different we are.

ChrisC, is there a place to see when and where all these cultural events are? I have never heard of the 3 that you just mentioned.

Yes,

The "Icelandic day" is held on the city park (Spanish Fork) each June. I can't remember the day and there is a website, but it's not maintained so well. It commemorates the group of Icelanders who settled in Spanish Fork way back when. They have some events, concession stands, some products from Iceland, an Icelandic "dinner." Because of my interest in languages, I'd hoped there would be some Icelandic language enthusiasts, but not so much. There were a couple of people who actually spoke Icelandic there last year, though. There is also a small memorial that flies the Icelandic flag and a granite statue on Spanish Fork 3rd South and about 600 or 700 east. Here's the not-so-well-maintained link:

Utah Icelanders (http://www.utahicelanders.com/oldwebsite/index2.html - broken link)

The Scandinavian Heritage Festival in Ephraim is a bit better organized and is held on a weekend I believe in May. It celebrates the heritage of Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland settlers in the Sanpete valley and surrounding area. I've been unable to find any Norwegian speakers, though. Link:

Again, I know about this one primarily because of my interest in languages and there was a woman I knew who spoke Scots Gaelic who was involved. But I don't know as much about the Scottish Festival because I haven't been to that one in years. Here is the website:
