I also try to keep the driveway cleared of snow before driving over it too many times which will compact it and later make icing a problem. Another tip is to make sure that the driveway is properly sloped, meaning the crown in the center and proper angle to allow runoff to shed sideways and not down the driveway itself. Keeping snow berms plowed back will also greatly help. If you have a natural seep of water then you might need to do a cross trench and put in a gravel and pipe drain to shed water away. The only driveways I have seen with heavy icing are ones that don't get plowed enough or ones that have the mentioned natural water seep. Anyway, the driveway of a home should be a consideration for lookers and possible buyers. What looks so pretty with wildflowers and ferns in June can become a glacial conquest in winter. Also, keeping sand and gravel at hand in the summer can come in handy also because a torrential rain can gully wash a driveway in spots. This is also a good time to watch and see how water flows along your driveway and take corrective steps to ease the problem come winter and spring freeze thaws.

I do to, Vermont and winter go together. Seems as though if you feel you have to complain about it, you should move.

Oh boy, this always comes up at our semi-annual private road meeting.
You have the highlanders on one side of the street and the lowlanders on the other. The lowlanders are always accusing the highlanders of runoff on their property, and rightfully so. I've been lucky so far. Our neighbors just had their driveway worked on because water was running down their driveway, across the road, and down the driveway of the guy across the street.

It's not cheap either. Just another one of those costs you don't think about before you move here.

As I've said before. It's like going to a chinese restaurant and complaining they don't have spaghetti.

Well moving is easier said than done sometimes and those who hate heat/humidity should do the same?

Must be you are one of those happy people all the time

You make a good point concerning issues with neighbors in proximity and prospective buyers should take note of this. I'm lucky that I don't have close neighbors and the drainage improvements I made send the water into the woods or nearby existing streams.

I'm perfectly happy, but there is no sense in complaining about winter in Vermont when it is such a part of what the state has to offer.
