In case Mustard did not make it clear, the answer is yes!

Vermont USED to be very conservative, but the tide started turning in the 60s. We do have a republican governor & lt. governor, but a democratic controlled senate/legistlature. I would venture to guess that MOST Vermonters actually site somewhere in the middle. We of course do have our "super-duper" liberals as well.

"Is Vermont Liberal?" is like asking if Hawaii is an island.

History;

back 70 or 80 years ago Vermont was very Republican- but that was an echo for what the GOP stood for in the mid to late 19th century- which was against slavery (the first state to abolish slavery) and very progressive on social issues. Well the GOP began to change around the time of Teddy Roosevelt(became increasing conservative and big business)- TR who fought big business and the trusts and was also the first real environmentalist- he looked out for the common man- and left the GOP in 1912 to form his progressive' Bull Moose Party'.

Vermont remained staunchly 'old guard' Republican into the 70's- conservative in economics- but liberal on social issues. Actually it has changed little, although in migration has changed demographics to a degree. The Republican party has changed- which is why the state votes for those same social liberal issues, while moderation in economics- The state has rejected AND disdains the current GOP's hard swing to the right, and now is more 'comfortable' with the Democrats.

Also, migration of sixties "hippies" moved into valley towns like Brattleboro, and with them their liberal agendas.

Sadly, Spunky it is more liberal than some of us care to take. I own a little piece of Vermont because I love the rivers and Mountains and forests. I like her people too.

the liberals are not as bad as they are in NYC or Boston or Philly though, they will actually treat a black person as an equal--unlike in Boston, Philly or NYC. the taxes are what makes it a bad liberal state really. the flatlanders came in to drive up prices like the Californians did to beautiful Oregon and Washington and Now Idaho and Arizona, forcing the working native vermonters into a de facto peasantry--I have seen it happen to so many communities around the US and sadly to the wonderful state of VT
