I went to college in Lynchburg in the late 80s. I found the accent of the locals to be very strong. Other than that I really didn't see a whole lot of difference between there and SE/Central PA where I grew up. Both places were just kind of all-American towns. The differences I did notice in no way qualified as a whole separate culture. I would say exactly the same thing about the areas of North Carolina (pre Yankee invasion) and also Tennessee that I've spent time in. Same basic lifestyle and people; different accents.

It's true that, for the most part, Americans are much more similar than they are different.

I heard a story on the radio the other day featuring a South Carolina family who were vacationing somewhere. The dad had a very thick Southern accent but the son had no accent. He sounded like someone from Northern Virginia. I think you'll see Southern accents disappear very soon. Kids now just don't seem to have them.

That story is very true because the other day i heard a man with a thick southern draw but his children sounded like they could be from the midwest or something and this was in Roanoke Va.

Really? Or are you just trolling?

Virginia does have a lot of Southern culture if you leave NOVA. Richmond to me actually had more southern charm than Raleigh-Durham did. A lot of the Shenandoah Valley, Lynchburg, Danville too. People do have Southern accents and you can get fresh brewed sweet tea there (not true in Northern Virginia). Virginia outside of NOVA is also a very conservative state, just like every other state in the South.
